CMU and Apple have created a novel approach to the robot manipulation problem! They put mini-depth cameras all through the robot's arms. These generate point clouds that allow the arm to navigate its surroundings to get to the object to grasp more easily. Traditional methods often require tons of training data in random environments or kinematics models that don't work well with dynamic obstacles. Now, if the cost of these depth cameras are under $50 and are industrial enough to last 3 years, I can see a real case for this being the standard! It's not how humans do it, but then again, humans have an incredibly complex brain. This concept reminds me of "biblically-accurate angels": Ezekiel 10:12--And their whole body, their rims, and their spokes, their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes all around—the wheels that the four of them had.
