Brazilian researcher Renata Martins explores 18th century artwork made by Indigenous women of the Amazon, which supplied the European Luxury Market. The study, published in MDPI's Open Access journal Heritage explores how the artwork was made, and its cultural and social significance. The artwork consisted of pots made from cuias, a type of gourd fruit and stained with cumate, a type of natural red varnish. The pots were then designed with floral motifs inspired from Asian and European art and reflected cultural, religious and spiritual practices of the Amazonian community. All articles in Insects MDPI (ISSN 2075-4450) Vol 15, Issue 10, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wPwsX COVER STORY: Understanding the distribution of plants and animals is a major focus of ecologists and is of increasing importance as temperatures rise and the world’s climate becomes more unpredictable. One large-scale pattern that has often been observed is that the number of species in a group of interest is greater in the tropics than towards the poles. Species also tend to decline in number at higher elevations. This study from the University of Canterbury examined mayfly species distributions at 243 sites throughout New Zealand to see whether their presence and composition were related to latitude and altitude. The results found that the number of mayfly species declined at higher latitudes and elevations. Furthermore, the species composition of communities became increasingly different with distance along the latitudinal gradient.
