A friend of mine who is a familiar value based collaborator and a frequent contributor to value based initiatives sent me a note today as he attends a conference with thousands of fellow attendees at the American College of Healthcare Executives. He mentions that there is no talk about CAA and little about VBC. While there may be little talk at this conference, I’ll tell you that I have hope as I personally receive calls from big health systems looking to compete in their respective regions against volume and fee for service dependent leviathans. Individual health systems suddenly have a HUGE opportunity to help employers to meet their fiduciary responsibilities under CAA with direct to employer initiatives that can effectively and efficiently de-risk employer populations. They can give employers superior access to care, predictable and warrantied cost and quality and, potentially, consumer friendly experiences by integrating digital health solutions and providing site of care optimization that favors consumers. In short, they can use their population health resources to be direct relevant to the SPECIFIC employer populations that need them most. I can’t think of a greater differentiator and potential disruptive force for every region. Offer fair costs with high quality and become relevant. Reading this piece today shows me that some systems are thinking about this opportunity seriously: “Stony Brook Medicine has taken big strategic steps for digital transformation and delivering value-based care. Leaders who are focused on innovation, improving quality and access while also understanding predictive analytics will thrive, Ms. Popwell said. She sees the most effective leaders being visionary thinkers, strong communicators and adept at collaboration and building trust.” Things are changing in healthcare. It’s time for legacy systems to pay attention and to onboard visionary leaders who can drive systematic change. "The acquisition has been approved by state and federal regulatory agencies and closed March 31." "Pennsylvania-based Geisinger, which runs 10 hospitals, was highlighted as an ideal inaugural partner for the budding value-based care platform due to the system’s experience running a roughly 600,000-member health plan." "Risant Health is a nonprofit subsidiary of Kaiser Permanente, though it operates separately from the system’s core model of a closed integrated care network." 👇 What the future looks like: "Risant has a big-picture goal of bringing multiple regional health systems under a single umbrella—'four to five' more over the same number of years—and tapping the expertise of each to build a technology-supported care platform that would improve outcomes and reduce patient costs." "Industry experts have theorized that the broad scale of Risant Health would serve as a bulwark against other large players like UnitedHealth Group, Amazon or Aetna CVS Health." The #vision behind CPHC is a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a healthier, more inclusive society. It's about empowering communities with the knowledge and resources they need to lead healthier lives. It’s about ensuring that healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental right. Dear Patients for Patient Safety US Champions, Strategic Partners and Friends, Reminder: The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has published a draft five-year Federal Health IT Strategic Plan for advancing the use of electronic health information and preventing its misuse. It is now available for review and Public Comment, and the timeline is short! Public Comments must be filed TODAY, May 28th before 11:59.59 PM ET. The draft Strategic Plan can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gmauHaVm. It addresses several issues important to our network, including patient safety, health equity, the privacy of personal health information, and AI. The draft plan was developed in collaboration with more than 25 federal organizations engaged in regulating, purchasing, developing, and using health IT to deliver care. How much patient input into the plan was solicited, if any, is unclear. So, this Public Comment opportunity is a way for us to be heard. Attached in both Word and PDF formats is a Public Comment developed by a PFPS US working group expressing support for many of the objectives and strategies outlined in the draft plan and offering feedback, suggestions for strengthening the plan, and requests for consideration by the ONC. Our requests involve paying greater attention to engaging patients and family caregivers in the continued development and implementation of the plan and implementation oversight and putting much greater emphasis on diagnostic safety, which is barely referenced.
