Charity leaders and Fundraising Directors, be extra awesome to the community, events, and IG fundraisers in your life this month. Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells all seem to say "throw cares away," for almost everyone except those responsible for driving income in December - probably against a really big target because income this year is down. Tis the season to be jolly but things are far from calm and bright as teams rush around to deck the halls and delilver santa runs, carol concerts, bucket collections, volunteer thank you events, and festive fayres. And while there's playing of the merry organ and sweet singing in the choir, those involved in The Big Give will be losing deep and dreamless sleep over their targets as they do everything they can to encourage supporters to throw their arms around the world (or at least your charity) at Christmas time. As an excellent leader it's well within your gift to turn this into the season of goodwill this year: - Show some interest. Keep a calendar of events this month and drop your teams a good luck beforehand, and ask how it went afterwards. - Be present. Go along to as many events as you can, just dropping in to wish the team your best will show them you care. - Bring teams together. Mobililse non-fundraising teams to support those who are up against it. Getting the whole org writing Christmas cards creates lovely vibes and breaks siloes. - Spread goodwill. Be extra lovely to your IG fundraisers between 3-10 Dec and try to resist the urge for daily income and KPI updates. - Be forgiving. Acknowledge that burned-out teams may not always be mild, obedient, and as good as can be. Because, surely, at this time beyond all others, ye who now will bless the poor knackered fundraiser shall yourself find blessing. Here are a few tips to help you stay present and show your dining companions the respect they deserve: 📱 Put your phone on silent and keep it out of sight. It’s hard to give your full attention with a screen lighting up every few minutes. 📱 If you’re expecting an urgent call, let your companions know at the start of the meal, and excuse yourself from the table to take it. Keep the call brief so your companions aren’t left waiting for long. 📱 Avoid the temptation to take photos or videos of your food in formal settings. While a quick snapshot might seem harmless, it can be distracting to others trying to enjoy the moment. In a world full of screens, giving someone your undivided attention is the ultimate show of respect. Let’s talk about Corporate Volunteering I would safely bet that if you work for a reasonably sized orbganisation that you will have the opportunity to use a day a year to volunteer for a charity and if you don’t I would also safely bet that if you made the approach your Senior Team would support a volunteering day ask So……Have you??? It makes a HUGE difference to charities, especially at this time of year, to have people actually contact them and say ‘Hi, have you got any collections coming up that I can help you with’ If you are saying this face to face - hide your hands because the fundraiser will SNATCH it OFF 🖐️ I hate to think how many collections aren’t maximised or even worse are cancelled because they don’t have enough volunteers. Alzheimer's Society we had a great partnership with Tesco which allowed us access to our local stores for collections on a very regular basis and we could never maximise them because we just didn’t have enough people to give us a couple of hours of their time If you still have a volunteering day to use before the end of this year PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reach out to charity close to your heart and ask them if they need you If you live near a Tesco contact the store and ask the COMMUNITY CHAMPION if they can match you to a charity who will be in store over Christmas It makes all the difference AND it’s a wonderfully heartwarming uplifting thing to do; anytime of year it will give you all the feels but at this time of year, when sometimes we get lost in the noise of Christmas, I promise it will ground you (ask Ed Renshaw who was supporting Lincoln Foodbank on Friday with his volunteer day) The gift of time is the most wonderf gift we can ever give to anyone, but especially to a community fundraiser Let me know in the comments if you take part, share your photos or tag me, I would love to know what your company offers as part of their CSR policy and who you choose to support #fundraising #volunteering #volunteerday #corporatevolunteer #csrpolicy #tesco #communityfundraising #wellbeing #leadership
