🚨 Tackling Counterfeit Medicines: A Growing Patient Safety Concern in South Africa This World Diabetes Day, we’re highlighting the urgent need for safe and equitable access to diabetes care. At IPASA, we are dedicated to breaking barriers to promote access to innovative medicines for all. However, the growing threat of counterfeit medicines, particularly Glucagon-like Peptide (GLP-1) products, jeopardise patient safety and undermines progress in diabetes care. These counterfeit GLP-1 products, often sold online without SAHPRA’s approval, are untested and frequently misused for cosmetic purposes. The risks are significant, affecting both diabetes patients and those unknowingly using unsafe products. 💡 Tune into Channel Africa as our CEO Bada Pharasi will address this critical issue on how we’re working to combat counterfeit medicines and promote responsible access to quality diabetes treatments. Don’t miss this important conversation on safeguarding patient health! #WorldDiabetesDay #PatientSafety #IPASA #DiabetesCare #SayNotoUntestedMedicine #PatientSafety #SAHPRA

⚠ Finasteride / Dutasteride and Suicidality ⚠ The EU is now investigating the potential links between the use of medication containing Finasteride / Dutasteride and suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Medicines containing Finasteride / Dutasteride (5 alpha reductase inhibitors) are used to treat Androgenetic Alopecia (aka, Androgenic Alopecia – Male Pattern Baldness) and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Following moves by Japan in August 2023, Canada in January 2024 and more recently, the United Kingdom in April 2024, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has started a review, at the initiative of the French medicines agency ANSM Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé. The Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) will be conducting the review and share its recommendations in February 2025. #patientsafety #androgeneticalopecia #bph #finasteride #dutasteride #propecia #proscar #drugsafety #medicinessideeffects #drugsideeffects #sideeffects #mentalhealth #postfinasteridesyndrome #pfs #malepatternbaldness #prostatehealth #hairloss #depression #suicidality #practicalwisdom

Counterfeit medicines: what are the risks, and how can you spot them? Recently, we became aware of cases around the world involving the sale of counterfeit medicines, and I believe it's important to raise awareness about the impact of this. Counterfeit medicines are a serious threat to people's health, as they are often produced without any quality control, and may contain toxic substances. Some important information: • Medication should always be prescribed and monitored by a doctor • Always purchase your medicines from regulated pharmacies • Be cautious of very low prices and sales promoted through apps, social media, or messaging groups If you identify a Novo Nordisk product that seems different from the standard, you can report it through a local unit. You can access specific information about it by visiting https://lnkd.in/d--a6Dft. Just select the country to find the contact details. I encourage you to take a look at the following website: https://lnkd.in/dr-SwdSE. https://lnkd.in/g-BKDPZU Checking for Safety – Fentanyl Detection at Insite we dive into an impactful study from the Harm Reduction Journal by Mohammad Karamouzian, Carolyn Dohoo, Sara Forsting, and Mark Lysyshyn. The research evaluates the effectiveness of a drug-checking service at Insite, Vancouver’s supervised injection facility, during a period of heightened fentanyl contamination in street drugs. Key findings include: 🔬 Many substances tested at Insite were found to contain fentanyl. 📉 Clients whose drugs tested positive were more likely to plan a reduced dosage—a step toward safer use. 🚫 However, they were less likely to discard their drugs entirely, emphasizing the need for nuanced harm reduction strategies. While the study acknowledges some data limitations, it underscores the critical role of drug-checking services in reducing overdose risks and promoting safer practices among people who use drugs. As the overdose crisis continues, this research sheds light on innovative, life-saving interventions that could serve as models for harm reduction facilities worldwide. 💡 How can we further integrate evidence-based harm reduction practices into public health strategies? #RareDisease >> Important news: Ukraine provides patients with hemophilia A with essential medicines thanks to MEA 💊 Another successful step in supplying innovative medicines was the procurement of Emicizumab for adults and children with hemophilia A. The purchase was made through the Managed Entry Agreements (MEAs) mechanism, which allows Ukraine to conclude agreements for the supply of expensive but essential medicines. This drug is a critical need for Hemophilia A patients, where even minor skin injuries can lead to prolonged bleeding, and any injury can lead to severe consequences. 📌 The MEA has been signed for three years, ensuring endangered patients receive this drug until 2026 eoy. The first deliveries are expected in December. This is the 16th agreement under the MEA since the mechanism was introduced in 2022. Thanks to this pathway, the state can provide access to innovative treatment for patients with serious, rare diseases regardless of their financial capabilities. South Africa recalls J&J's cough syrup on suspects of toxicity. 💊What happened? South Africa's health regulatory said it is recalling it's batches of Johnson and Johnson children's cough syrup after detection of high levels of diethylene glycol. 💊Where did they sell these batches ? The affected batches have been sold in South Africa, Eswatini, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. 💊What is Diethylene glycol? and where is it used in cough syrup Diethylene glycol (DEG) is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste. It's commonly used in antifreeze and industrial solvents. It has only an industrial use i.e. DEG is used in antifreeze and industrial solvents. 💊Which company is responsible for this..? Kenvue is the company responsible for this but... J&J (Johnson & Johnson): Used to own the Consumer Healthcare division, which included Benylin Paediatric. Kenvue: In August 2023, Kenvue became a fully independent company spun off from J&J's Consumer Healthcare division. So, Kenvue now owns Benylin Paediatric and other well-known consumer health brands. J&J still has a stake: Though independent, J&J still owns a minority stake (around 9.5%) in Kenvue. 💊Bonus: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cough syrups should ideally have no detectable DEG. By the way today is the 25th day of me deep diving into the pharmaceutical industry. I will be sharing insights from this industry on a regular basis.
