🚢🛟 Ensuring #Safety at Sea: The #Lifeline of #Emergency Boats 🛟🚢 The sight of inflatable emergency boats ready for deployment is a powerful reminder of the critical importance of safety at sea. Frontline workers on large ships rely on these lifelines in the most dire situations. Here are some eye-opening statistics about the use of emergency boats: ✅ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), over 85% of seafarers have participated in at least one emergency drill involving lifeboats each year. This shows the reliance on these safety measures to ensure preparedness in case of emergencies. ✅ 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: The IMO reports that lifeboats have been deployed in over 200 maritime emergencies annually, saving thousands of lives. These boats are often the last line of defense in critical situations. ✅ 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: Despite their life-saving potential, the usage of lifeboats comes with risks. Data from the Seafarers' International Research Centre highlights that nearly 20% of reported injuries on ships are related to lifeboat drills and operations, underscoring the need for continuous improvement in safety protocols. As we watch these emergency boats being prepared, let's remember the vital role they play in maritime safety and the brave seafarers who depend on them. Supporting and enhancing safety measures for our frontline workers at sea is crucial for their protection and well-being. #frontlineheroes drive #frontlinesuccess ________________________ 👋 I'm Cris. 🍽 Provisions: A Vital Connection to Home For seafarers, provisions on board go far beyond the essentials - they offer a sense of home while working in the middle of the ocean. Being at sea for months, far from family and friends, is challenging, and having access to familiar foods and quality supplies makes an enormous difference in morale and daily comfort. That’s why we make it a top priority to ensure that every vessel is stocked with everything the crew could need, from fresh products and nutritious meals to quality goods that help them feel at ease. Provisions are more than just physical necessities; they are a way to remind the crew that they are cared for and supported, wherever their journey may take them. The recent grounding of Goundar Shipping Limited's LP VII near Moala Island, carrying 245 passengers and 33 crew members, underscores the importance of maritime safety in our region. While it is reassuring that all passengers were safely evacuated and the crew remains unharmed, recurring incidents involving shipping vessels raise concerns about operational standards and accountability. The swift response by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), including the deployment of life-saving equipment and coordination of emergency procedures, highlights the value of preparedness and collaboration in safeguarding lives at sea. As the Pacific relies heavily on maritime transport, preventing such incidents must remain a priority. This requires strict adherence to safety regulations, regular vessel maintenance, and continuous crew training to mitigate risks. Beyond emergency responses, a proactive approach to maritime safety is essential to protect passengers, crew, and the marine environment. Read more below:

It is always unsettling to hear of any maritime incident that negatively impacts the lives and livelihoods of seafarers, regardless of the context or cause. I am sure that many of you will also feel deep empathy for any crewmembers in stricken vessels that we have never heard of, and never met. This is the value of the brother-and-sisterhood of the sea; as sailors we always help each other – no matter what – and when we are thousands of miles away and cannot help, our thoughts are still with those crewmembers who are less fortunate. It has therefore been particularly gut-wrenching to learn of two unrelated incidents to a pair of vessels with which I have a personal connection, in events that have both occurred in the last 48 hours. The first incident was the tragic loss of the schooner Gallant near the Bahamas. With two crewmembers still missing and SAR Operations now suspended, this will be an unimaginably awful time for everyone involved. I know that the thoughts and prayers of the whole maritime sector are with those affected and their families. After learning of that event, I was absolutely caught aback (in the metaphorical sense) to hear that another sailing vessel I love – and one in which I spent happy years skippering – has also been in need of help this week; this time 6,500 miles closer to home and on the opposite side of the Atlantic, the former sailing trawler Leader (fishing number LT474) was taking on water, before being assisted by multiple lifeboats and brought safely from the north Cornish coast “around the land” to find a haven in Newlyn today. These have been two very different incidents, with very different outcomes, but a sobering reminder of the perils that can affect all of those who go down to the sea in ships and do business in the great waters. May you all have fair winds and following seas.

Today is International Day of the Seafarer! This year, the International Maritime Organization has chosen safety at sea as the theme to raise awareness about the need to protect the physical and mental wellbeing of the two million seafarers worldwide. Safety at sea will also be a key topic in our next issue of Cruise & Ferry Review, which will be published in August. If your company provides products or services to help passenger ship operators protect the safety of their crew members, guests and vessels, contact your CFR account managers to find out how you can get involved in our annual Maritime Safety feature. #SafetyTipsAtSea #DayOfTheSeafarer #cruise
