I Tend to Think I’m a Critical Thinker......... My boss once told me to train others to think like I do. But the truth is, you can’t teach people to think like you. Critical thinking is personal—it’s about pausing, asking questions, and seeing all sides before jumping to conclusions. I recently reviewed a study on workplace violence, that took place in a large urban emergency department (I can relate, I am an ED nurse). The numbers in the study were alarming 🟥, but instead of stopping there, I looked deeper: ✒️ The study was conducted at a large urban hospital. ✒️ 92% of participants reporting workplace violence were white. ✒️ Urban hospital often serves diverse patients, primarily people of color. ✒️ The statistics on healthcare disparities for people of color, are not good. *Interestingly the participants who identified their ethnicity as "other" reported lower rates of workplace violence. * It is my belief that people don’t come to the hospital wanting to be violent. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface, and it would be naïve to think healthcare disparities do not harm relationships. Critical thinking means: ✒️ Asking, “What’s missing?” ✒️ Considering every angle, even the uncomfortable ones. ✒️ Looking deeper instead of settling for surface answers. I can’t train someone to think exactly like me, but I can encourage them to slow down, dig deeper, and never take things at face value. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵, 𝘭𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵. Why your medical team matters. Family offices partner up with wealth and legal advisors to assemble a dream team for their clients. I strongly believe it is just as important to make sure your medical team is optimized and communicating to mitigate health risk. _ _ _ 3 reasons to put medical teams on your radar. A connected team means access to more expertise. When a cross-disciplinary team works well together, their collective intelligence leads to better solutions. A cohesive team means care is not delayed. Look at it this way: a geriatrician should have a hearing specialist on staff, a mental health program should have a neuropsychologist on staff, and a nursing home should have a podiatrist on staff. And nothing falls through the cracks. Strong teamwork also improves communication by making sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to treatment plans and patient care. _ _ _ Is your medical team on the same page? Let me know in the comments below. For more tips, link to the full article in the comments. Need healthcare advice? At Wellworth, my team and I advise family offices and their clients on healthcare issues that require bespoke advice. Let's be honest with one another. We all have our limitations (Step 2). It's important to find opportunities to close the limitation gap. STEP 1: My role is to house a food pantry within the hospital and prepare for the distribution of non-perishable items for all inpatients indicating a food insecurity who are being discharged to home, hospice or home with home health services. STEP 2: A limitation I have is that I will not be the one asking the patient social drivers of health questions, providing resources or documenting education, so I need ➡️ patient experience representatives ➡️ case management ➡️ social workers, and ➡️ nursing to help develop the process that they can integrate into their workflow. STEP 3: My role is different in that I am supporting the interprofessional engagement and collaborative practice of other health team members. I am not sure that my role is similar to anyone else on the team, but we are share the same goal of supporting patients with food insecurities. I hope this process helps you and your team members communicate roles and responsibilities.
