THE CLASH OF LOVE AND CROWN The clash of love and crown in Femi Adebayo’s “Seven Doors” is symbolically wrapped in the lines below which the king renders in the heat and height of his frustrations: Ìfẹ́ loni kín dádé, mo dádé Ìfẹ́ loni kín jọba, mo jọba Mo wá jọba ọ̀ún tán Adé fẹ́ fà mí nífẹ ya pẹ́rẹpẹ̀rẹ. My translation of the lines above: “Love demands of me to be crowned, I am crowned. Love demands of me to be king, I am king. When I am eventually king, the crown threatens to turn my love into shreds.” This is inadvertently a clash of powers. For crown is a type of power just as love is another kind of power. Crown and love represent two opposing forces. One reigns supreme in political realm while the other survives in the realm of emotions and responsibilities. But crown and love need each other for meaningful execution of the demands of their offices. What is crown when it does not rule without love? What is love if it does not understand responsibilities? Most countries of the world are ruled from the bedroom. The bed and the throne then become the potent symbols of power and governance and eros. Ademidun understands this and thus never goes against the wishes of his main queen. Power is however a shameless beast when it is not tempered/seasoned in love. That’s the reason for the rise of dictators in some countries of the world. The crown will always be a threat to love. It takes another kind of power to maintain the balance. Look around you, power is always brutalising many things that stand on its way to achieving its objectives. What this portends is that: power has a price. Love too has a price.
