As a legal person in the media industry, one of my main responsibilities is to manage and monitor the legality of collaborations and events. This time, an unusual request came from our production team. The first time I contributed directly to the field as a master of ceremony for the 2024 Jakarta Fair. Gladly, the event ran smoothly & everyone was satisfied. However, in this post, I really want to discuss the other side of the legal profession. Should a legal person always be serious and unemotional❓It seems that some still hold onto this misconception. But the fact is that every legal person has their own emotional intelligence and personality. I believe that having a sense of humour and passion for things you like, such as one of my passions is public speaking, can be an asset in the legal field. This quality has always helped me become a more effective communicator, able to show genuine emotions so as to provide a comfortable environment and establish professional trust relationships with clients and/or colleagues. It doesn't mean that a serious and calm attitude is not necessary. But complemented by being authentic and true to yourself, your unique personality can help you stand out in this field that sometimes feels very formal and rigid. Meritocracy is a system that evaluates individuals based on their intelligence and abilities, regardless of how many connections they may have. Meritocracy solely judges people on their intelligence and capabilities. Recently, social media seems to be mobilizing society, especially Gen Z, to believe that (connections, relationships, networking) are everything. There’s nothing inherently wrong with networking, but in developing countries like Indonesia, where the majority of people lack sufficient knowledge and critical thinking, this can be used to justify nepotism. Meritocracy must be present in all areas of society, particularly in the recruitment process. Companies should evaluate candidates based on intelligence and competence, not on 'connections'.
