🤝 IFU GUARANTEE FACILITY MAKES FIRST DEAL IN AFRICA 🤝 SME companies are imperative for growth, jobs and economic development in Rwanda. But the country’s SME sector suffers from a significant funding gap of more than USD one billion. High collateral requirements of up to 120 % is a main barrier for SMEs to obtain bank loans despite banks in Rwanda being highly liquid and adequately capitalised. The IFU Development Guarantee Facility has issued its first guarantee in Africa to BPR Bank Rwanda Plc. The Guarantee of USD 5.6 million is targeting loan financing for small and medium-sized (SME) companies in Rwanda to grow their business, create jobs and make green investments. “With up to 70% guarantee coverage, we’re making it easier for local businesses to access financing, foster growth, and create jobs, thus contributing to sustainable economic development across Rwanda,” said Patience Mutesi, BPR Bank’s Managing Director  👇 Read full story in comments Ole Thonke Signe Winding Albjerg Magnus Cedergren #rwanda #impactinvesting #dkpol

The first guarantee in Africa by the Development Guarantee Facility of IFU was launched today in Kigali together with BPR Bank Rwanda Plc and Access to Finance Rwanda and supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Great work by all colleagues involved, especially Christoffer Ipsen, Jonas Armtoft, and Theo Ib Larsen. Thanks also to Sida great cooperation on risk assessment and technical assistance. The guarantee will support SMEs in Rwanda to access finance for investments to grow their businesses and job oppotunities in their communities. This a fruit of a journey that started in MFA in 2019 when I was first recruited by Ole Thonke and we engaged with Ministry of Finance to get a sovereign guarantee instrument in place in Danish development cooperation, which succeed under the leadership of Signe Winding Albjerg. With all three of us present in Kigali today for the lauch, it is a true milestone. Looking forward to follow the implementation of the guarantee in this new partnership with BPR Bank and Access to Finance Rwanda.

This initiative is a significant step forward for SMEs in Rwanda, paving the way for sustainable growth and job creation. Exciting times ahead!
