Your focus determines your destination. I spent 16 years of my firefighting career as a smokejumper, parachuting into remote areas to put out wildfires. This is a lesson that I learned and have carried with me into all areas of my life. Focus on where you want to land, not on what you want to avoid. When you parachute into a wildfire the landing zone is filled with hazards - rocks, trees, and other obstacles. It’s easy to get focused on avoiding the hazards, but it has the opposite effect. If your focus is on not hitting the hazard that's inevitably where you’ll end up. It’s not about ignoring the dangers. Quite the opposite. You make a plan to avoid them. But your plan is rarely executed with precision (there’s too many variables when jumping from an airplane). You jump, then make adjustments during the flight. As you near the ground, those hazards that looked small from the airplane, get bigger and bigger. Recognize the hazard, but keep focused on the exact spot you want to land. Steer towards your destination as opposed to away from the danger. How this applies to your life. 1 - Choose where you want to go (your end state or goal). 2 - Identify the hazards. (what could go wrong). 3 - Make a plan. 4 - Jump. (aka take that first step) Then adjust as you go. 5 - Focus on the exact spot you want to end up and move towards your goal as opposed to away from your fears. Regardless of where you land, you’ve either hit your target or have gotten close and improved for the next mission.

Fewer birds are nesting here, and any more disruption to the ecosystem may collapse it. We have been on our "sell everything" adventure for more than a year, and living on Aevitas, our sailboat, for a year of that time. What a year of lessons and unforgettable experiences. I am really enjoying the "one day at a time" aspect of this life. There have been some definitely not fun times, but there have been more "Wow!"(in a good way!) times. I have spent more time outside of my comfort zone than I ever would have in my previous, land-based, life. A Glimpse Into The Past: Secret Santa and The Storms We Braved 🎅🎄🌩🌪 Last night, while clearing some old files, I stumbled upon something that brought a smile to my face – a Christmas poem from 2020, written by my Secret Santa. It took me back to a time when the world, and S.M.I.L.E., faced challenges that tested us all. The poem talks about keeping our services going during Covid-19, navigating stormy waters 🌊, and supporting one another as a crew 🚢. We worked through social distancing, temperature checks, and constant uncertainty to ensure our doors remained open for the young people who needed us most 🙌. Looking back, it reminds me of how much has changed – and how much has stayed the same. Our challenges may be different now, but the commitment and passion at S.M.I.L.E. remain unwavering 💪. We continue to push forward, innovate, and do whatever it takes to serve our community, just as we did during the toughest times. That poem reminded me of how proud I am of my team 🏆, the resilience they’ve shown, and the impact we’ve made together 💜. As we move toward the future, with new ideas 💡 and new challenges, I’m confident that the ‘good ship S.M.I.L.E.’ will keep sailing strong ⚓️.
