The Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 marked a crucial moment in American history, where the nation was divided in a war with itself. It was also the era of the industrial revolution, the northern states, governed by Republican leaders, attracted millions of legal immigrants seeking economic opportunities, safe communities, freedom, and quality education for their children. Black Americans also migrated to the North, in what is known as the first Great Migration, to escape the harsh treatment in the South and pursue the same opportunities as other people. Fast forward 161 years later, the country is involved in a cultural war, with Republicans now governing the former Confederate southern states. Yet, the motivations that drive people to uproot their families and their businesses remain the same - good governance that leads to economic prosperity, safe communities, personal liberties and quality education for their children. Oye, mira. Yesterday, October 23, 2024, South Carolina unveiled a statue of Robert Smalls, a man who played a huge role in American history but hasn’t always been widely recognized. Smalls was born into slavery, but he didn’t stay there. He made his own path to freedom by taking over a Confederate ship during the Civil War and bringing it to Union forces. This wasn’t just about escaping—he took action that helped others gain freedom too. Smalls went on to become one of the first Black men to serve in Congress, where he worked to secure rights for Black Americans. His life shows us what courage and determination can do in the face of unfair systems. This statue is a big deal because it highlights a part of history that often gets overlooked. For years, statues have been put up to honor people who supported oppression, but this one recognizes someone who fought against it. Robert Smalls’ legacy is important because it reminds us that the fight for freedom and equality has always been part of our history. Honoring him with a statue is a step in the right direction, but we need to keep working toward real equality in our society. Today marks the anniversary of the tragic death of George Floyd, a moment that sparked a global movement for racial justice and equality. As we reflect on this significant day, it is essential to acknowledge the impact it has had on our society and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of diversity, equity and inclusion. Over the past year, the media has been filled with both positive and negative narratives surrounding DEI efforts. While it is disheartening to see negativity, we must remember that progress often faces resistance. It is during these challenging times that our dedication to the cause becomes even more critical. To my fellow DEI practitioners, your commitment is unwavering; thank you! But we must keep advocating for positive change. Remember, our collective efforts towards DEI are not confined to a single day or moment. It is a journey that requires continuous learning, growth, and action. When the algorithm places posts on my feed, I try to react honestly without regard for hurting anyones feelings. I am being targeted with content, so I am being prodded to react. I am a social justice warrior at the core. I don't give a damn what religious lable anyone wishes to wear or more realistically had it branded on them as children and are doing their best to leverage that lable into doing something worthwhile for the world, their neighbors, or themselves. It is good to see people doing good work. We need social groups like these in every town. America would be a significantly kinder, friendlier, and safer place to live. However, it is extremely difficult to comprehend local social justice when globally we as American's (both Jews and Christians) are being programmed to support mass murder and the total destruction of life and property of people overseas that we cannot see or hear or help in any real way. It matters immensely how one answers this question. Is it only regional or local social justice we care about or does that notion apply to all people, everywhere? The lables Christian and Jew have been destroyed and redefined by those who lust for power and wealth. They have manipulated of our media and our government at every level to such an extent that we now have churches and temples cheering for mass murder labeled as self defense. White Nationals are not Christian and Zionists are not Jews. Anyone joining any social justice organization should be clear about the definitions going in because even Hitler and the Nazi's had millions of innocent families engaged in what they believed were social justice groups that were entirely for the benefit of the German people.

Today and ANY day, ask yourself: ♥️ What are you doing to encourage diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion in your personal and professional life? Do your actions match your words? 🧡 How can you help create space and then support diverse voices and faces in making use of that space? When is the last time you used your platform or network to uplift diverse voices? 💚 In what ways are you currently benefitting from the same societal, social, or professional structures that are harming others? Today marks the anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party, a movement that is often misunderstood.While many associate the Panthers with radicalism, their core mission was rooted in hope, community empowerment, and self-determination. They stood against injustice, but they also built programs that directly uplifted their communities. Free Breakfast for Children Program Community Schools Health Clinics Political Education These initiatives addressed systemic inequalities and empowered Black communities, ensuring that essential needs were met. Their legacy lives on today in how we think about community care, self-reliance, and the power of grassroots organizing. The Black Panther Party gave us bold ideas about what’s possible when we come together to serve and support one another. Let’s not forget their profound impact, especially as these kinds of efforts can sometimes be overlooked in modern narratives. The power of the Black Panther Party is a reminder that hope and empowerment are just as revolutionary as any political stance.
