I’m excited to share my first in-person speaking engagement at the Impact Partners Summit in May! 🗣️ I’ll be taking the stage in front of an audience of social-impact leaders working to collaboratively serve the nonprofit sector better 💞 I believe that a huge part of that is learning from each other about what is working - and, maybe more importantly, what’s not working! 🤷🏼♂️ Too often we hear about successful companies and organizations through rose-colored glasses after the fact - which causes pretty significant success bias 🤩 But we’re missing the more valuable knowledge of what did you try that didn’t work? Why did you try it? What part did work and what ultimately was the downfall? #thankfulThursday Today I am “on the road,” locally, for a board strategy session, local business holiday market, and fund/friend-raiser for a fabulous not-for-profit. I enjoy a primarily Zoom-based diet, with healthy portions of slippers and tea. And enjoy the convenience and comfort of working from home as much as anyone. AND, the connections, creative collaborations, commitments, and FUN that have already emerged today are exponentially more impactful than a week of Zoom rooms could have been. First, we reviewed our 2024 activity as B Local Connecticut , the statewide body that amplifies B Corp certified and other responsible or conscious businesses. Our purpose is to Make CT the best place in the nation to do business as a force for good. And then identified and delegated 2025 priorities as a board. Stay tuned 🤩 Now, I’m headed over to the buzzy holiday market place at B Corp certified co-working space, HAYVN Coworking Community, to find some locally made and sold gems for gifts. And then, a gathering with other supporters of Defy Ventures , a hugely impactful national not-for-profit that cultivates an entrepreneurial mindset in people who are incarcerated. Their participants have less than a 15% chance of landing back in prison after 3 years, compared to the dismal national average of 39%. This agenda has me fully alive, leading in 3D. I took a few steps toward my Me dimension goal of being a recognized and valued authority on aligned and high-impact leadership. Contributed to a clear and practical agenda for B Local CT (WE). And get to support several for- and not-for-profit organizations that make life healthier and more prosperous for under-recognized people (minority business owners and incarcerated and formerly-incarcerated folks). So, here’s to getting out of the house to create, collaborate, and LAUGH with other like-hearted folks. 𝗧𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗜𝗣 #𝟭𝟮𝟲: A recent report by McKinley Advisors, "Membership Reset: Delivering on the Promise of Membership," highlights a critical gap in many associations' strategies: the undervaluation of membership models. In the pursuit of nondues revenue, associations often neglect the importance of membership, treating it as a secondary concern rather than a central pillar of their value proposition. The study argues that for associations to thrive, they must recenter their focus on membership by identifying and addressing the core problems their members face. This means going beyond offering discounts and looking at how to build and sustain a meaningful community. Associations should ensure membership is an integral part of their business model, backed by adequate resources and strategic planning. Effective membership engagement is key. Leaders are encouraged to closely monitor engagement metrics to understand participation levels and refine their approach. By doing so, associations can better align their offerings with member needs, ultimately driving retention and satisfaction. In conclusion, treating membership with intentionality and care is crucial for associations aiming to provide lasting value to their members. Let's make membership a proactive choice, not an afterthought.
