This International Women's Day, the need for a transformative departure from the status quo is more urgent than ever. Women-led households disproportionately live in core housing need, and there is a severe lack of deeply affordable housing that meets the needs of women and gender-diverse people. A lack of safe and secure housing compounds additional issues of discrimination, including those contributing to the disproportionate violence and marginalization facing Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland will be presenting the federal budget on April 16, and now is the time to push for women and gender-diverse people’s housing needs to be reflected in it. Join the Women’s National Housing & Homelessness Network, the Pan-Canadian Voice for Women's Housing, and the National Indigenous Women’s Housing Network and send a letter to federal leaders urging them to support the Intersectional Feminist Housing Agenda's 15 Calls to Action. Let's make #InvestinWomen a reality and meaningfully address the housing and homelessness crisis for women and gender-diverse people, once and for all. https://lnkd.in/dhJRZMRD

“The need to focus on women and housing has never been more acute than it is right now in the middle of a housing crisis.” Today we celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and reflect on how this year’s theme – economic empowerment for women – relates to our work. At lunchtime Homes NSW CEO Bec Pinkstone was joined by NSW Rental Commissioner Trina Jones, Homes NSW Executive Director of Housing Services Tara Vella and Homes NSW Senior Program Officer Tenisha Lawrence, to speak with our staff about how women leaders across all levels of government and industry are working towards equality and better housing outcomes for people in NSW. "It’s women who are seeking assistance in our homelessness services due to domestic violence, abuse and poverty,” said Bec. “Women are more likely to be tenants in the social and affordable housing we provide. “And it’s women who are the majority of our workforce in housing, particularly on the frontline of service provision. “Access to safe, affordable and secure housing is a women’s issue, and it is a feminist issue.” Seeing the difference the work we do in Homes NSW makes to women’s lives is a privilege. We will continue to create space for the voices of the women we work with and support, treating them with dignity and respect, and work hard to deliver all people we support better outcomes. Collaboration is key for transformative change. Addressing deeply entrenched social challenges—including housing and homelessness, climate change, and substance use and mental health—requires solutions that go beyond what any single organization can achieve on their own: it demands cooperation across sectors, especially between governments and communities. But what does meaningful community engagement look like in practice? And what conditions are needed to overcome barriers to collaboration? This week, Blueprint is thrilled to be attending the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) Annual Conference for a panel discussion: Tackling Social Challenges Together: Lessons from the Frontlines of Community and Government Collaboration. Nadine Smith (Government of Manitoba- Women and Gender Equity Manitoba), Cynthia Drebot (North End Womens Centre), and Cordella Friesen (YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg) will join Blueprint’s Karen Myers and Emily Colpitts to share insights from a recent gender-based violence initiative in Manitoba and explore what it takes to enable transformative, sustainable, and evidence-informed collaboration between community and government. #BetterEvidence #PuttingDataToWork https://bit.ly/3XPiztH

New report now live! This important new report "Community Led Housing For All" details how community-led could help tackle racial inequalities in housing AND how we can address barriers to CLTs and other CLH for Black and minority ethnic communities. Key findings: - Community led housing is a way for communities experiencing racial inequality to influence planning and development processes - Awareness of community led housing with communities experiencing racial inequality is low, leading to under-representation in leadership roles - The sector needs to improve data collection to provide a quantitative understanding of representation - The potential for proactive engagement and more inclusive decision-making to ensure funding and delivery models are shaped by lived experience - The potential and benefits of greater peer-to-peer support - The need for long-term funding for the sector Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/d6TiPRNc As co-funders alongside Nationwide Foundation, Power to Change and The Tudor Trust, we're incredibly grateful to researchers Claude Hendrickson MBE, Henri Baptiste, Tom Moore, and Yael Arbell, as well as all of the interviewees who shared their experiences to help shape this report and its recommendations. Their work and contributions offers key guidance as we all take our next steps to making community-led housing a more inclusive sector and a better route to housing equality.
