Of course, I'm not going to leave you. I promised to share the ills in the PR industry, but today has been one of the most tedious days as I had so much on my plate. However, as a good PR practitioner, I must always show up and deliver what I have promised you, my dear reader. The first issue in the PR industry is the recruitment of untrained personnel (in terms of education and professional experience) into the profession. I have seen someone with no media background, no PR or communication experience, nothing related to the profession, parading himself as a "PR Manager." I can only imagine the fate of the company when it's faced with a crisis. People like this, sometimes, with no background knowledge of the job, can just become liabilities and contribute to the downfall of the organisation’s reputation and image. I'm not saying you SHOULD employ someone with a PhD in PR to become your PR manager, nor am I saying you SHOULD hire someone with 100 years of experience in the role. All I'm saying is that you MUST do one of the above, honestly. It doesn't cost anything – maybe it does – but it is something you should do for the good of your organisation. There is a lot of communication that goes on between journalists 📰 and public relations (PR) professionals, which is why it’s common for many journalists to leave media to join the PR world. But the transition might not be as easy as you think. As a former journalist and current PR pro, here are some tips I can provide those who are looking to make the jump. 📚 Study your PR 101. While media relations and outreach is a part of PR, it’s not the only part. Get to know the fundamentals like internal communications, strategy development, thought leadership, crisis communications and digital media. 👨🎓 Once you’ve done that, fill in your gaps. Find where you could use more experience and search for opportunities, including pro bono work, to increase your skillset. 🏫 Look for ways to upskill. There are lots of thought leaders you can follow to gain helpful tips and insight. My favorites are Michael Smart, Gini Dietrich and Ann Wylie, CSP. You can also search for free certifications. Muck Rack has a great series. 🤝 Build your network. As a journalist, you’re receiving pitches from PR people on a daily basis. Use your contacts to develop relationships and pick their brain on the PR world. 🔎 Look for the right opportunity. When you make the jump, you want to make sure it is the right fit and that your skills will be utilized in a way that will help you be successful. 📕 Understand your strength as a storyteller. PR revolves around the story you are telling about your client/employer. "Journalists from national publications are preferred for public affairs roles. There are not many opportunities in the communications industry. Adding to this, any day a journalist will get preference over an agency folk or someone in the corporate sector. Journalists also get paid much better for the comms role, which was one of the key findings from our Salary Survey. This trend creates competition for agency professionals and those in the corporate sector," says Shashank Bharadwaj, Founder & Managing Partner - WebX Integrated Marketing Solutions and CommsJobs.in. Economic instability, industry shifts, and evolving job descriptions seem to be accelerating this trend. "Today, it’s all about cross-functional experience. There is a huge demand for roles focused on “people and culture,” which combine internal communications, Diversity and Inclusion and HR. Another role that is really in demand is public affairs. Due to the changing dynamics in government, politics, and geopolitical situations, journalists are increasingly preferred for this role. DAY 1: I'm not sure Public Relations is For Me😪 Why specialise in Public Relations? What about Journalism, Broadcasting, and other fields? This was the question our Dean posed to us. Trust us to have diverse answers, each reflecting our unique perspectives. He continued, "One crucial aspect of Public Relations is learning to manage your internal publics effectively." This resonated with me deeply. An organisation can crumble if it fails to manage its internal publics well. While external publics are important, you can't step outside without first coming from within. Makes sense, right? Internal publics include employees, the management board, shareholders, and volunteers. External publics consist of the media, customers, suppliers, government, and others. When you analyse these groups, it's clear that one is inherently part of the organization, closer and more integral than the other. As an aspiring PR officer or a current practitioner, it's essential to understand your internal publics, work closely with them, delve into their minds, and win their trust. Be open to their feedback, criticism, and growth, because they're like your underwear. If you don't treat them well, you'll end up with problems that everyone can notice.
