Tim Bristol, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, FAADN your guidance on challenging the status quo is truly invaluable! Your call to action to confront the alarming number of preventable deaths in healthcare is a powerful reminder of our mission's urgency. It's concerning that some health systems in the US lack integrated simulation programs, underscoring a critical moral imperative. Let's unite to democratize healthcare simulation and drive positive change. Thank you for inspiring us to make a difference! #democratizehealthcaresimulation
Aviation has been touted as a model for #patientsafety, and it's one of many high-risk industries that has made dramatic strides in safety through innovation, education, and an unwavering commitment to preventing harms. Nurse educator Tim Bristol, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, FAADN in Newsweek makes an urgent call for nursing to learn from these industries and employ new tools, such as simulation, to prepare the next generation of nurses to provide safe care. A National Patient Safety Board will support advanced technologies that make #healthcare safer for patients and providers. https://hubs.li/Q02y9zP-0 HealthySimulation.com

In 2022, over 600 U.S. schools awarded advanced nursing degrees—three times the number of medical schools training physicians. Alarmingly, some of these programs were entirely online, offering minimal patient contact. Research has shown that Nurse Practitioners (NPs), while helpful in a setting of physician-led care, can contribute to higher healthcare costs and less-than-ideal patient outcomes when not adequately trained and operating independently. As the scope of non-physician care continues to expand, it is only natural for both physicians and patients to question the implications for safety and quality. NPs no longer just support doctors; they increasingly provide independent care in specialty practices and emergency rooms without proper oversight, often at the same cost as a physician but with a fraction of the education. When their training falls short, the consequences can be severe. Therefore, advocating for physician-led care is crucial to uphold the highest standards in healthcare delivery. #Healthcare #PatientSafety #MedicalEducation #PhysicianLedCare #NursePractitioners #HealthcareQuality #MedicalTraining #HealthcareCosts Centivox https://lnkd.in/gB7uVc3t https://lnkd.in/gvv7bXCA https://lnkd.in/gFDbjGyj

Solution is simple: shorten physician training and enhance training standards for mid-levels. Physicians undergo rigorous training, including four 8 to 15-hour exams (USMLE) after 8 years of basic science education, while nurse practitioners and physician assistants lack a comparable level of testing intensity. An insightful article from Bloomberg sheds light on the growing role of nurse practitioners in the US healthcare system. With over 300,000 nurse practitioners and a projected 45% increase in ranks by 2032, their responsibilities are expanding significantly. Nurse practitioners, equipped with advanced degrees and licenses, are increasingly pivotal in patient care, able to diagnose ailments and prescribe treatments akin to medical doctors. This shift offers benefits such as quicker access to care for patients. Is it cost-effective to deploy more nurses on hospital wards? Currently the National Health Service (NHS), in common with many health systems around the world, faces shortages of registered nurses. Common sense and a huge body of evidence suggest this is far from ideal to deliver high-quality patient care. In acute general hospitals, when there are fewer registered nurses, more patient care is missed, quality is reduced and patient outcomes are worse. But fixing the problem is likely to be expensive and it is important to ask if this is the best way to spend money in a resource-limited system. Are there alternatives to using registered nurses? The Magic of Teamwork in Healthcare! One thing I’ve learned as a nurse is that teamwork makes all the difference! Working in a respiratory ward, I teamed up with an amazing group of healthcare professionals—respiratory nurse specialists, doctors, physiotherapists, care assistants, and support staff. Each of us brought unique skills to the table, making our team stronger. I remember a challenging patient case that felt like a puzzle. By working together, we created a care plan that addressed not just the medical needs but also the emotional support the patient needed. This experience showed me that when we collaborate, we can achieve great things for our patients! What’s your best teamwork moment in healthcare? I’d love to hear your stories! #Nursing #Teamwork #Collaboration #PatientCare #Healthcare

Advancing the science of nursing practice requires innovation. Leveraging technology enhances evidenced-based practice. We are seeing firsthand how GEN-AI can provide reliable information to the nurse enhancing individual clinical knowledge. Technology is helping nurses make more informed decisions. We have a virtual assistant, it is not a replacement for the nurse.
DID YOU KNOW? | According to the Journal of Informatics Nursing, providing technology to improve safety does not remove all risks. Technology can support the critical thinking and judgment of the nurse but should not be a replacement. #factfriday #healthtech #nursinginformatics
