Project: Hygienic Water Storage We recently implemented a two-step solution for a manufacturer of high-end cooling elements for refrigerated transport. The production process involves the use of water, which is buffered in two tanks. Maintaining the microbiological quality of this water is crucial. Bacterial growth or biofilm in the tanks is unacceptable. Therefore, we implemented a two-step solution for this project: ✔ Disinfecting all incoming water with a UVC flow-through system, reducing the presence of organisms in the incoming water by >99.99%. ✔ Maintaining clean buffer tanks 24/7 with a submersible UVC solution, even on hot days or during production stops. Both the flow-through system and the submersible system are equipped with fault and maintenance alarms. I think it’s worthwhile reminding folks that there are two ways of controlling legionella in domestic hot water (DHW) systems. There is thermal control where we heat water to a temperature of 60 degrees C and above even though we know that some legionella can survive temperatures up to 70 degrees C. DHW needs to be maintained above 50 deg C to prevent the multiplication of legionella (55 degrees in a Healthcare environment).We then have to reduce the temperature of the water to 40 degrees C using thermostatic mixing valves ( TMV’s)so it can be used comfortably for bathing. This avoids people getting scalded. Because TMV’s are expensive to install and require regular servicing there is an ongoing debate about where TMV’s should or, should not be installed to keep hot water users safe. The second method is to circulate water at 40 deg C and dose a biocide. This method saves energy as water no longer needs to be heated to 60 deg C.it does not require TMV’s and is the only appropriate method of treatment where heat pumps are used to produce DHW. In many cases heat pumps cannot heat water above 50 deg C making many systems vulnerable to legionella risk. The question is why is biocide treatment so rarely used? Why does thermal control prevail when it is more expensive, increasingly less effective as heat pumps replace conventional boilers, and requires annual maintenance.

I am thrilled to witness the advancements in the water industry's technology, particularly with innovative devices like Smart Water Stop Valve. Yet, we must approach claims such as "Prevent Legionnaires' Disease" with caution. Example: A customer (Healthcare Site) recently reached out after receiving an alert from their 🧙♂️ magic device, suggesting the presence of Legionella (Exact words of the customer: "We have this device installed on the incoming mains that tells us if we have Legionella in our system, and we've received an alert indicating that Legionella is present."). I had to explain that the device doesn't confirm the presence of bacteria; it indicates conditions (temperature and lack of water flow) that may support bacterial growth. Proper risk assessments are crucial and cannot (😜not yet) be replaced by technology alone. As fascinating as these innovations are, they complement—not replace—the critical safety measures. Smart tech helps, but knowledge and compliance with HSE's ACOP, HSG 274, HTM 04-01 Guidance remain the cornerstone of water safety and legionella management! It's the blend of innovation and know-how that protects us.
