Reflecting on my experience today, speaking to the new ASYE cohort at Luton Borough Council, I am reminded of the power of embracing change in social work. Sharing my own ASYE journey and insights, I saw how pivotal our role as NQSWs is in shaping the future of practice. We are change agents, not just responding to challenges, but driving innovative solutions—especially with exciting initiatives like the Pathfinders Programme, which empowers families to mobilise their own networks. As I emphasised today: real social work isn't about saving people, but empowering them to create their own change. The ASYE year is a unique opportunity to hone these skills, challenge the status quo, and collaborate with families to drive lasting, positive outcomes. To the new NQSWs, your journey is just beginning, and it’s full of potential. You are not just learners—you are leaders of change. The first time I encountered the initials #SDG was in an informal setting. A guy was asking random questions and handing out gifts. When he asked, “What does HP stand for?” someone shouted “Hot Point!” Laughter. 😃 Then he asked about the #SDGs. Some people got the answer right, but while many of us knew the name Sustainable Development Goals, we didn’t fully understand what they were. Interestingly, many of us are contributing to achieving the SDGs without even realizing it. But once we become aware of them, we tend to commit more intentionally. Social media, I believe, can serve as an excellent accountability partner. So I challenge you—join in and take part in the effort! #Club17 #GlobalGoals 1.
