“It was pure chemistry – team chemistry, Mom. That’s all,” my son said. You know that feeling. When everything is clicking. There’s pure joy at work because everyone is contributing, adding their special gifts. The work feels effortless. Achievements or wins just come rolling in. It feels like pure bliss. My son experienced that last week, as his Soccer Academy held its final scrimmage or Championship Match. He was put on a team of only three. Those three all came from the same elementary school. They all played soccer at recess. They all knew each other’s playing styles and strengths. Beating out other teams made up of four players (sometimes with one player hanging back to play goalie), they made it to the Championship Match. In the final round, to keep things fair, one boy was added to that team. How he was selected, no one knows. But boy was he jubilant. He jumped with Joy to be added to this dominant team and leaped with enthusiasm to be in the Championship Match. Though they welcomed the extra two-feet, the chemistry had changed. As they sweated it out, the score changed back and forth.  I wish I could write, dear readers, that they won it all. They did not. The other team slammed in a goal in the final minutes and were awarded a logoed mini soccer ball as a trophy. There was momentary disappointment. And yet, deeper learning came as a reward. Team chemistry – what is that? When you know you can trust, rely, depend upon a teammate for their skill, talents, and insights – it all just works. Very inspiring presentation yesterday by SeraNovo CEO Niall Hodgins! My three key takeaways: 1) The team is crucial, but knowledge transfer is difficult 2) Iteration and obsession are key 3) If you are not enthusiastic, you won't make it through hard times!

I have learned as a PM that your team is only as good as you are. The best thing you can do for your team is to empower and serve them so that they can become better. Never take short cuts with people, because they will take short cuts on you.
