It is a race to get people through their training period as quickly as possible. but that attitude leads to disaster How many times have you been given a brief walkthrough of the system by another manager and then let loose. Having a ton of conversations about training in the restaurant space lately. It's so exciting to see that people are finally focused on this category and how to improve the experience for owner's and employees. This all starts with what you measure matters. The best training programs identify the gaps in onboarding, development and ongoing reinforcement for the various members of the team. This can be something as simple as helping to train on the process of opening the restaurant up for business each day by turning on the lights and unlocking the door, to something more complex like training around beverage or sides attachment rate to entrees (thus having a meaningful impact on employee compensation via tips and driving a better guest experience and check average). It's critical for restaurants to be looking for partners that not only provide the technology platform to track and identify training opportunities (by integrating with your other systems like POS, onboarding etc.) but to be able to provide functional learning expertise to help you build out the training(s) that you need. These are often very different skillsets. I would also highly orient towards those who work or have worked in the Restaurant/Cannabis space as the employee communities there are a bit different (language requirements, turnover etc. ) are materially different than traditional large scale enterprise populations.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗠𝗦: WKS Restaurant Group came to Intuition with the ambition to redesign their employee learning protocol. Up to that point, learning was provided on an ad-hoc basis, and often fell to the responsibility of line managers with varying degrees of onboarding experience. This case-by-case approach to learning contributed to a number of challenges, including inconsistent learning, poor performance, and high turnover. The end solution was WKS+, a bespoke LMS configuration offering restaurant workers the ability to seamlessly access essential learning and onboarding materials from the comfort of their mobile device. What are the costs of not properly training our restaurant teams? As any restaurateur will tell you, training staff correctly is ESSENTIAL to the success of your restaurant. Onboarding and training are priority #1 for new hires. We spend weeks onboarding and then spend multiple months continuing to train our teams so they know how to do things accurately according to our mission and programs. When we fall short of our standards, we see it in guest feedback, employee morale, and controllable costs. When training doesn’t happen well, the losses add up - think about it - the cost of refunded orders, of making a dish incorrectly and having to make it again, of giving the wrong order to the wrong delivery driver, and ultimately, of guests not returning. My advice to anyone beginning their journey in the restaurant industry/as a restaurateur: INVEST IN TRAINING.
