Our ASSIST Mekong Regional Director Aru David and I met with Mike Dahlgaard of the Danish Green Business Partnerships, which awarded us a grant for our SPLASHED project. Using our partner Vestergaard's Lifestraw filters as base units, we developed water ATMs to give access to potable water for underprivileged and indigenous communities in Mindoro. SPLASHED aims to reduce water-bourne diseases and single-use plastic, as well as promote good WASH practices, entrepreneurship and disaster resiliency. #PartnershipsForProgress Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST)

Food Security and Value Chain Development Expert Zambia's policy landscape is shaped by two pivotal documents: Vision 2030 (2006-2030) and the 8th National Development Plan (8NDP, 2022-2026), serving as cornerstones for all sectoral policies. Vision 2030 highlights the importance of climate change mitigation, emphasizing diversification in agriculture, and expansion of irrigation while ensuring access to renewable energy and clean water. Meanwhile, the 8NDP has three key strategic areas (Economic Transformation and Job Creation; Human and Social Development; and Environmental Sustainability). The pivotal role of sustainable agriculture in enterprise development, environmental protection and food security is clear. Agriculture plays a pivotal role in fostering Zambia’s socio-economic development and accounts for 51% of the labour force. Over 50% of the Zambian population depends on local agricultural production for food, primarily through smallholder production, however, the sector remains vulnerable to climate change which is increasing in incidence. Yesterday brought a mixed bag of emotions as I submitted a position statement on behalf of Maribyrnong River and Waterways Association. Our mission is to represent community aspirations for the Maribyrnong catchment, informed by feedback from hands-on events and water literacy workshops. This is a privilege we take seriously, knowing that many individuals, including those that work in the public service, can’t always express their personal views and aspirations openly. The position statement outlines ten recommendations to improve environmental flows in the Maribyrnong catchment, to support biodiversity. The statement is a reminder of the pressures on our waterways. A recent article in the Age :https://lnkd.in/gQDZBr2a highlighted that over a quarter of Victoria's major water projects are delayed, and while I somewhat understand the pressures on public sector resources, the stakes for our waterways are too high to ignore. Redirecting funds from water corporations for other debt repayments, as we’ve seen, risks extending delays and compromising long-term drought resilience and the health of our waterways. Hitting "send" was nerve-wracking, not only because of the potential implications for an already-stretched public service but also because MRWA risk losing state funding for our advocacy work. After sending the statement I raced to my daughter’s school performance of 'Where the Wild Things Are' on the oval amongst the gum trees. The spring twilight and singing kids were the perfect safety net. They reminded me of a key reason I do this work—so that future generations can experience the sheer joy of clear streams, frog calls after the rain, and living creeks and rivers. Really proud of the excellent work being done by African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) to facilitate enhanced agricultural yields towards achieving food security in Africa. Building upon the organization's successful programs, I am thrilled by the progress made in addressing a key concern raised by this soybean farmer, Paul Justice. In partnership with AGRA, USAID, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, AFAP's Trade Credit Guarantee Program in Ghana will see an additional $8 million of fertilizer for sale on credit each year to agri-SMEs (hub agro-dealers) serving retailers and smallholder farmers like Paul. Benefitting from volume discounts, we aim to keep the product affordable and available in sufficient quantities to meet the market demand. In addition, we are supporting technical assistance through trained extension workers for farmers, while creating jobs for youth in rural areas. The program includes the establishment of demonstration plots, farmer field days, and training for farmers and hub agro-dealers in the use of improved inputs, good agronomic practices, climate smart technologies, business management, and much more. By the end of the three-year implementation period, we expect to see a 20% increase in yields, and a combined total of 200,000 smallholder farmers in Ghana achieving increased agricultural productivity and higher incomes. #foodsecurity #blendedfinance #guarantees #Africa #Ghana #sustainableagriculture #youth #jobs #climateaction #sustainablefinance #sdgs #economictransformation #climatesmartagriculture
