Somaliland's Telecommunications Sector Sees Landmark Cable Landing Somaliland has made a significant advancement in its telecommunications industry. The arrival of the G2A submarine cable, owned by Telesom , brings Somaliland's total submarine cable connections to three, alongside Peace cable and 2Africa cable owned by Somcable Ltd. The G2A cable will significantly enhance Somaliland's internet infrastructure, providing faster and more reliable connections as well as drive digital growth across the Horn of Africa region. In 2016, the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Government issued a mandate to enhance inter-island communications, aimed at establishing a national fibre ring and ensure robust connectivity. In 2023, Cambridge Management Consulting was awarded a contract to prepare a feasibility study to implement a domestic submarine cable system to further this objective. Subsea cables are crucial for island nations, offering superior capacity and latency, as well as the economic growth and benefit to hospitals, ports, and emergency services secured by high-speed internet. The growing demand for telco and Internet service, such as in Southeast Asia, has boosted the construction of new subsea cable capacity. Heavy dependence on this critical infrastructure requires securing them from a myriad of risks. The complexity and length of these digital backbones require more public-private partnerships and international cooperation.
