This year for #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I find myself reflecting on the shocking and unacceptable statistic that Black women are still three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. And in Philadelphia, Black mothers are twice as likely as white women to die within one year of childbirth. We need to work together immediately to eliminate these disparities to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all. At Independence Blue Cross, improving black maternal health outcomes is a cornerstone of our efforts because so many lives depend on it. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #HealthEquity #HealthJustice

As we observe #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, it's crucial to shed light on the disproportionate health risks Black mothers face, like a higher risk for preeclampsia and a fatality rate that is 3 to 4 times higher compared to non-Hispanic white women. Early detection and equitable care can change outcomes. Let's commit to empowering women with knowledge and support for better health outcomes.
A Seattle mom’s journey highlights the reality Black women face during pregnancy and childbirth, with a 60% higher risk of preeclampsia. Dr. Patricia Egwuatu of Kaiser Permanente shares the importance of early detection and empowerment in Black maternal care. https://bit.ly/40KUPIf #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #KPWA

~287,000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2020, yet most maternal deaths could have been prevented. Almost 95% occurred in low and lower middle-income countries. The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequalities in access to quality health services, according to the World Health Organization. All women deserve access to high-quality care in pregnancy, and during and after childbirth, as timely treatment can make a difference. #InternationalDayforMaternalHealthandRights #IntlMHRDay #MaternalHealth #BMHW24

Approximately 12 million girls (15-19 years) and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years give birth each year in developing regions. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for 15-19-year-old girls globally. We must protect our adolescents from unintended pregnancies. Preventing pregnancies and investing in #SRHR is essential to achieving positive health outcomes across their life course.
