The Gulf air market has certainly evolved in recent years. Before the pandemic, aviation was largely dominated by Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad. These 3 hawks flying over a dynamic market are now seeing new competitors emerge and the strengthening of existing players. Increased competition on various routes invites them to improve their service offerings, pricing strategies and operational efficiency. However, the air subject illustrates a coordination problem intrinsic to the rivalry of regional diversification strategies. According to the News, the Bahrain-Qatar Causeway project, officially named, will reduce travel time from five hours to just 30 minutes over a 21-mile distance. Originally estimated at £1.8 billion in 2008, the project's cost has now surged to nearly £2.4 billion. Designed to support both road and railway traffic, the bridge will extend the King Fahd Causeway, which connects Khobar in Saudi Arabia with Al Jasra in Bahrain. The bridge will reach a height of 40 meters to accommodate maritime navigation. Saudi cargo shipper Folk Maritime, owned by the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand its fleet. The shipping line aims to buy or charter 15 to 18 container ships over the next three to five years, Chief Executive Officer Poul Hestbaek said in an interview. The company operates just three vessels now. Saudi Arabia, like other wealthy Persian Gulf energy producers, is working to transform its economy to curb reliance on oil sales and build up industries such as manufacturing, technology and tourism. In support of that plan, the country is adding transportation links to connect consumers, companies and travelers. Key projects, including the futuristic city of Neom, expanded ports, and modernized infrastructure, highlight Saudi Arabia’s economic aspirations for the Red Sea region, which serves as a critical juncture connecting the Arabian Peninsula with Africa.
