MAG POCs (Multinational Advisory Group Point of Contacts) Meeting was held online on 28 May 2024 and gathered experts from the representatives of Members, Associate Members, Observers, and partners working in an open-minded atmosphere on the programming of the Centre’s activities. ➡ Opening the Meeting RACVIAC Director, H.E. It was great to be a part of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs workshop on European Security in Istanbul. These dialogues across divides are crucial for fostering understanding and finding new ways forward. In line with the meeting's theme of "Regional Approaches to Confidence-Building," I presented on how #emergingtechnologies can help prevent nuclear proliferation through collaboration among different actors. Despite tense relations and nuclear saber-rattling, there seems to be a continued, shared interest among the United States, its European allies, and Russia in preventing nuclear horizontal proliferation. Outside of NPT and IAEA meetings, Russia has approached nuclear energy issues, including meetings with the NSG, with pragmatism. Nonproliferation might be able to continue to provide a forum for conversations and communication.

ICYMI: Saudi Arabia has become the first country in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region to license the 600 MHz band for mobile. It also auctioned spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3.8 GHz bands. The total licensed frequencies for mobile in Saudi Arabia have now increased from 1110 MHz to 1400 MHz. “This achievement positions the Kingdom as the leading country among the G20 countries in total licensed spectrum for mobile networks in bands below 6 GHz,” stated the Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST). During #WRC23, the 614—694 MHz band was allocated for mobile and identified for IMT in the Gulf countries as well as in Egypt, Jordan and Palestine, according to footnote 5.307A R.R. 5. Ayman Maghrabi of the CST stated that this has made cross-border coordination easier. “The WRC-23 footnote is a reassurance that neighbouring countries will follow us in the decision to allocate the 600 MHz band soon,” he said. - 🗨️ Metrology Metrology is the science of measurement and its application. It underpins the quality of manufactured goods and processes through accurate and reliable measurement. Metrology plays a key role in the adoption of scientific and technological innovations, the design and efficient manufacture of products that comply with the needs of the marketplace, and the detection and avoidance of non-conformities. It provides fundamental support for health and safety testing, environmental monitoring, and food processing. Metrology also provides the basis for fair trading in a domestic economy and international trading in the global market place, and has a particular role to play when there is a societal need to protect both the buyer and seller in a commercial exchange of a commodity or a service provided, or where measurements are used to apply a sanction, and virtually all countries provide such protections through their legal systems. The global aspect of many of these areas involving measurement is increasingly important and needs to be taken into account as far as possible. Scientific and industrial are managed by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), whereas legal metrology is the domain of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).
