It was great to be a part of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs workshop on European Security in Istanbul. These dialogues across divides are crucial for fostering understanding and finding new ways forward. In line with the meeting's theme of "Regional Approaches to Confidence-Building," I presented on how #emergingtechnologies can help prevent nuclear proliferation through collaboration among different actors. Despite tense relations and nuclear saber-rattling, there seems to be a continued, shared interest among the United States, its European allies, and Russia in preventing nuclear horizontal proliferation. Outside of NPT and IAEA meetings, Russia has approached nuclear energy issues, including meetings with the NSG, with pragmatism. Nonproliferation might be able to continue to provide a forum for conversations and communication.
It was a huge honor to take part in a Pugwash Track II meeting in Istanbul last week! These meetings are opportunities for "dialogues across divides", where experts with different points of view meet to study each others perspective and discover new paths forward.
