In May 2024, the Government announced a "strategic examination" of the entire R&D system to "strengthen its alignment with Australia's priorities" and generate better outcomes. This "root and branch" review of public research funding presents a critical opportunity to transform an underperforming and fragmented system. However, we still await an announcement of the Review Panel and Terms of Reference. For decades, Australia has struggled with entrenched challenges in research funding, governance, and translation of research into economic and societal value. Australia can build a more resilient, innovative, and impactful research system by learning from international models and adapting them to deliver targeted reforms in the Australian federal context and Westminster system of individual ministerial responsibility. Reform will, however, require bold action and sustained commitment. Incremental change will not address tradition-bound practices and processes or deeply entrenched mindsets that characterise the current research funding system. The Review must aim for genuine transformative change, align research investments with national priorities, and ensure that Australia's research efforts contribute meaningfully to the country's future economic and social prosperity. #Innovation #ResearchFunding #Australia #R&D #EconomicGrowth #SciencePolicy #Commercialisation #PublicPolicy #NationalStrategy #TechAustralia https://wix.to/YOyXZpU #newblogpost

Collaboration is the key to connecting opportunity and investment to unlock growth and prosperity. By bringing together public and private sector decision-makers, innovators and experts in their fields, the Midlands Economic Summit is a crucible for thought leadership, motivating the action in partnership that will lead to a strong, inclusive and growing regional economy. The Summit will explore five major themes: Midlands devolution recognises that local leaders are best placed to make local decisions. How can we leverage this opportunity to build stronger public-private investment partnerships? Midlands collaboration is powerful and committed to achieving more together. How can connecting collectively with even greater ambition, urgency and scale accelerate growth and investment? Midlands innovation has a rich heritage that that continues today in the form of world-leading R&D. How can we capitalise on and commercialise this to drive investment back into the region? Midlands places matter to our communities, businesses and economies. How can we deepen and connect collaborative and transformational placemaking to drive inclusive growth? Midlands businesses are resilient in the face of challenge but hungry for growth. How can we empower our private sector to thrive by creating the best conditions for investment and growth at scale and speed? The Midlands Economic Summit will consider these and many other thought-provoking questions as we work together to tackle barriers and capitalise on opportunities to drive investment and power growth.
