Meet Ryan Flaxman Project Floors NZ “The design potential drew me in; the sustainable vision will keep me here.” “Businesses that don’t prioritise sustainability won’t be in business any more by 2030,” says Ryan Flaxman, Project Floors’ new Business Development Manager. “That’s what I love so much about this role: the opportunity to bring products to the New Zealand building market that will change the game in terms of sustainability.” Ryan joined the Project Floors team in early 2024, bringing with him a decade of industry sales experience. “Prior to this, I was working in the plumbing industry with what are referred to as ‘front-of-wall’ products, basically the pretty side of specification including taps, sinks and basins. Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn to the design aspects of that work. Through roles in sales and merchandising, I gained an eye for detail that is really benefitting me in my new role with Project Floors. It feels like a series of happy coincidences led me here, and everything is just falling into place.” In his first few months as Business Development Manager, Ryan has enjoyed bringing his design eye to potential clients and building new relationships with the industry. “Project Floors can deliver pretty much any floor covering you can imagine. Within the wider commercial flooring context, I look after our workspace market and deal primarily with designers, architects and specifiers within the office space realm. The first step for me has been to build those foundations, connect with industry, and share the great work that Project Floors can do. DELIVERING THE DEICORP DIFFERENCE Deicorp's construction updates are designed to keep our purchasers informed on the progress of their new home or investment. In this latest update, Luke Fitzgerald, Site Manager at The Ashford Castle Hill shares on the most recent progress at the project. As we enter the final stages of the project, external scaffolding has been brought down, allowing external civil works to be completed. During this phase, our skilled team has also been focusing on the landscaping works, which are progressing well. Inside the apartments, flooring and carpeting are being installed in the remaining levels, while door hanging and fit off work is underway. Final coats of paint are being applied and soon final cleaning will take place in preparation for our purchasers to move into their new homes. The second tower crane has been successfully dismantled, paving the way for further landscaping works and the installation of the boardwalk. Behind the scenes, our Client Care Team is hard at work, preparing for exciting events such as the pre-settlement viewing. Fred Pilbrow’s article on the proposed Marks & Spencer building on Oxford Street brings to light several crucial considerations regarding low-carbon design and commercial viability. Pilbrow responds to Oliver Wainwright’s article in the Guardian (‘Public vandalism’: M&S wants to flatten its art deco flagship store – here are six alternative options). He argues that retrofitting the existing building would not only be environmentally detrimental but also impractical from a commercial standpoint. The current structures, described as of poor quality and poorly aligned, present significant operational challenges for any retailer. Westminster Council, the London Mayor, and an independent planning inspector have supported Pilbrow’s proposal. The inspector criticised Save Britain’s Heritage’s retrofit scheme as unfeasible. Arup, the consulting engineer, found that the proposed retrofit could be more carbon-intensive than building anew, highlighting the superior operational efficiency of the new design, which would rank among the top 1% in the UK in terms of performance. Far from being an act of public vandalism, Pilbrow sees the project as a forward-thinking investment in placemaking that will enhance the high street and serve as a beacon of UK expertise in low-carbon design. At first, we wanted to be the Vinted of construction 🏗️📦 The concept was simple—just like people buy and sell second-hand clothes on Vinted, why couldn’t we do the same with reclaimed construction materials? We started by serving individuals. People reached out to us for 20m² of bricks, tiles for their bathrooms, or reclaimed wood for small home projects. What we quickly realized was that, logistically, delivering a few square meters of bricks for a home renovation wasn’t much different from supplying a massive construction site. The challenge was pretty much the same. But we quickly learned a critical lesson: we would need an immense volume of transactions to have a substantial environmental impact 🌎 (and to be profitable 💰). So, we shifted our focus. Today, our focus is primarily on professionals, construction companies, and large-scale projects where we can have a more significant environmental while ensuring the financial sustainability of our business. Yet, we’ve never shut the door on individuals. We still receive requests from people renovating their homes, and one day, when our model is fully optimized, we aspire to make circular construction accessible to everyone. For now, our mission is clear: focus on the big projects where we can make the biggest difference.
