🌱🥩 Recent study found that alt proteins could help the EU become self-sufficient. The Green Alliance report commissioned by the Good Food Institute Europe highlights the potential of alternative proteins to reduce Europe's reliance on imported foods and achieve self-sufficiency, with supportive policies playing a crucial role. Three scenarios are outlined, with the most optimistic projecting that these proteins could replace two-thirds of animal proteins by 2050. However, achieving this would require substantial policy changes, including shifting subsidies away from conventional meat and dairy production and investing in the novel protein sector. Farmers could also benefit from transitioning away from livestock farming to nature restoration, which could double their income while meeting environmental targets. The Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture was initiated to depoliticize the debate on the future of EU agriculture and answer farmers’ protests. #RaboResearch examines whether its advisory report upholds the Green Deal or changes course. One of the Dialogue's interesting recommendations: "Systems change should be pursued by developing a sustainability benchmarking standard for farmers, consumers paying more for sustainable products, and dietary change from animal- to plant-based protein sources."

NOW OPEN: Public Consultation for Alternative Proteins Criteria 🌎🍴 Livestock farming contributes 60% of food system emissions and 12–20% of global GHG emissions, yet provides just a fraction of global calories and protein. To combat these challenges, we must scale up the production and distribution of alternative proteins—such as cultivated meat, fermentation-enabled dairy, and plant-based options. 🌱 The Climate Bonds Initiative is proud to launch the Public Consultation for the Alternative Proteins Criteria under the Climate Bonds Standard, running from 9 December 2024 to 7 February 2025. This framework will help certify climate-aligned investments in alternative protein production and distribution, ensuring a sustainable transformation of global food systems. ✅ Your feedback is essential to shaping the sustainable transformation of global food systems. TEN THESES ON MULTINATIONAL ENVIRONMENTALISM With love for Nature, indigenous philosophies, and for the traditional values which power global agriculture -- seeking Truth, consensus, and healthier policies that protect farmers, consumers, and ecosystems -– I intend to defend these statements, posted for public discussion on multinational environmentalism’s digital door: 1. Modern agriculture’s splintered structure conflicts with the interconnected natural systems upon which it depends. 2. Crop farmers, livestock producers, and consumers are divided by disconnected policies into competing camps. 3. While global malnutrition skyrockets, the world’s leading seed companies have intentionally prioritized profits over protecting soybean protein and food security. 4. Reversing the decline in soybean protein will deliver systemic benefits. 5. Government-controlled commodity promotion boards have an opportunity and responsibility to protect the public and Nature from the systemic damages caused by falling soybean protein, which are measurable in livestock diets. 6. The world’s policymakers and multinational nongovernment organizations (NGOs) have prioritized climate issues over feeding people and protecting ecosystems. 7. Family farmers have lost billions of dollars in natural feed sales to higher-emissions synthetic substitutes that hurt livestock health while increasing livestock CO2 emissions and nitrogen pollution. 8. Biofuel policies undermine food security because soybean oil competes with protein. 9. If reversing protein declines is prioritized over biofuel policies, farmers can help millions more malnourished people from the same number of acres, reduce grassland and rainforest losses, and cut livestock CO2 and nitrogen pollution by millions of tons. 10. Politicians and food companies have a moral and public responsibility to prioritize human nutrition over climate control efforts. Does lab-grown meat provide us with the protein we need? With the continuously growing population of the world, traditional systems of food production face immense pressures, especially with regard to protein sources. Traditional livestock farming is a very resource-consuming activity, with extensive use of water and land leading to environmental degradation and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Lab-grown meat, also known as cultivated or cell-based meat, represents a revolutionary approach to nutritionally balanced sustainability in this context. ** https://lnkd.in/di2BPrde **

📢 Over 100 international organisations and leading experts are demanding the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) urgently retract a key report, due to serious methodological errors that downplay the emissions reduction potential of lower-meat and dairy diets. ❗The real potential of shifting to healthy lower-meat diets (EAT-Lancet) is a staggering 6 to 40 times higher than the FAO estimates. The scientists who co-authored the two main papers used in the report have accused the FAO of distorting their work and are calling for the report’s retraction. 👀 Did the FAO just make some extremely embarrassing errors? Or did it intentionally distort evidence under pressure from the livestock industry? Either way, the FAO has questions to answer. These mistakes are a stain on the FAO’s reputation, unless rectified. 📝 That’s why we’ve sent an open letter to the FAO’s Director-General. 👉 The FAO must urgently retract the flawed report, and reissue it with mistakes rectified following engagement with academic experts and civil society. Innovation in Data Analytics from Offaly-based Agri-Tech firm Agri Data Analytics could be pivotal in the future of emissions reduction for the national herd. The tech firm, founded by Jack Pilkington and Alan O Donovan, uses the ‘bovine breathalyser’, an innovative technology that measures emissions from animals, analysing the data to give a true picture of enteric ruminant emissions, which are estimated to account for up to 68% of agri-emissions. Their aim is to provide agri-focused researchers with data which can used to identify high- and low-emitting ruminants, test methane-reducing supplements and determine ways of cutting carbon dioxide and methane output through genetic, dietary and supplementary means without compromising dairy and beef yields. The technology is already attracting significant attention, winning the AgTechUCD Innovation Centre Start-Up Award at the 2023 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena Awards. Knowing that ruminant livestock such as cattle and sheep, are agriculture’s largest driver of emissions, the FAO roadmap's failure to recommend cuts to #meat-eating is utterly bizarre. In order to align with the Paris agreement, meat and #dairy production must be drastically and immediately reduced. Thanks to the Global Alliance for the Future of Food for highlighting important truths about the #industrialmeatindustry which is taking a huge toll on #Planetaryhealth 🐄 Reports show Global emissions from livestock production need to decline by 50% during the next six years, with “high-producing and consuming nations” taking the lead. ⚖ There is no room for the FAO to take a "balanced approach" to animal agriculture as we are so far off balance that much bigger steps need to be implemented. ✋🏽 This is not referring to lower income countries who may need to rely on animal protein as a needed source of nutrients, but the higher income countries like the United States who eat a far greater amount of animal protein than is recommended, and which is being sourced from Intensive Livestock Operations the majority of the time. The myths, misrepresentation and misinformation needs to stop. #Humane and well managed animal husbandry can, of course, be part of the food system, but as is, it is simply not #sustainable #COP28 #eatfortheplanet #Bettermeat #lessmeat #plantforward #plantcentric
One of the biggest myths shared by the food industry is that intensive agriculture is critical to addressing global hunger. In fact, the opposite is true. Industrial livestock operations emit significant greenhouse gases, pollute the air and water, and waste vast acreage for livestock feed—all of which exacerbate hunger. This myth helps to extend the industry’s social license, delaying policy measures that could address the serious climate and health impacts of industrial farming. Our Executive Director Anna Lappé is quoted in an insightful article written by Rachel Sherrington via The Guardian: https://bit.ly/3xvvR59 #COP28 #COP29 #FoodSystems
