HOW TO EVOLVE INTO A STRATEGIC RISK MANAGEMENT ROLE
On October 21, I had the honor of participating in the roundtable discussion "How to Evolve to a Strategic Risk Management Role" as part of the MADRID FERMA FORUM, FERMA | Federation of European Risk Management Associations. It was a privilege to share this space with leading industry professionals such as Dirk Wegener (Global Head of Corporate Insurance, Deutsche Bank AG, Germany), Katalin Pàpa Pápa (Group Risk & Insurance Manager, Grundfos Holding A/S, Hungary), and Giovanni Roncaglia (P&C-PE-Financial Lines Director, PCA S.p.A., Italy).
During our discussion, we explored the evolution of the risk manager's role towards a more strategic function, emphasizing the importance of integration with senior management and the board of directors. Here are some key points from our conversation:
· COMPLEXITY OF THE GLOBAL LANDSCAPE: Over the past decade, we have witnessed a significant increase in the complexity of risks. The growing interconnectedness among these risks, the regulatory wave, and global conflicts have prompted companies to adopt a more proactive and strategic approach to managing uncertainties.
· EVOLUTION OF CORPORATE GOVERNANCE: A crucial factor in this transformation is the development of modern corporate governance structures, where the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) is increasingly integrated into senior management and the board of directors, adding value to decision-making processes. However, the rising complexity of the regulatory environment continues to pose challenges.
· NEED FOR TRAINING AND NEW RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CRO: In this context, the CRO assumes a vital strategic role. This includes promoting the integration of risk management with sustainability (ESG), identifying strategic and operational risks, and leveraging new technologies and artificial intelligence to model scenarios and potential losses. Additionally, the CRO provides a comprehensive view of risk to the C-suite and underscores the importance of ongoing professional development, recommending FERMA's RIMAP Certification for high-level training.
The roundtable also addressed emerging risks and discussed ways to elevate the risk management profession to a new level, along with the new strategic positioning of this function. Ongoing dialogue on these topics is essential for advancing risk management within our organizations. Thanks to Ferma, AGERS - Asociación Española de Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros, and Igrea for making this possible!
