Today marks my 36th trip around the sun. 🎂 But check this out... For the past seven years, the last few hours of my birthday always ended in tears. Once the festivities and well wishes were over until next year, it was just me and my thoughts in the dark. Every year, I felt like I had failed the better part of me -- the person I hoped to become.    I consistently made grandiose plans to start businesses, write books, read a book a week, develop a game, exercise more, learn to sing, and get back to drawing again—a litany of goals and dreams that didn't happen or got little traction within a calendar year. I lamented another year gone, further removed from the vitality and time of youth, with so very little to show for it. Once the calendar said "August 1, 2024," I braced myself for another moment of angst and regret -- a gradual emotional/mental decline until I hit rock bottom on August 14. It's so consistent that my husband has been checking in and asking if I'm okay more often, knowing my usual pattern. 🤣 But what is the point in repeating behaviors that don't serve you? With that in mind, I decided to spend the first two weeks of August doing something to change the narrative. Here's what that looked like: ⏱ I promised to give my activities at least 5 minutes a day. No waiting for a perfect, uninterrupted swath of time. 1️⃣ If I only completed one sentence, one scripture, one lesson, or one doodle, it was a win—no questions asked. ✨ I used the mantra "present not perfect". I forced myself to focus on the moment rather than whatever I wanted or thought the end result should be. I have been doing this for two weeks, with some missed days here and there, and I already feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what the next day will bring. It feels silly to think I wasted seven years obsessing over personal goals I kept pushing off for, "I'll do this when I have more time, knowledge, resources, motivation, etc." I may never finish designing a game, publish a book, or be a "master" at anything that interests me, and that's okay. With curiosity, a willingness to learn, and consistent little steps each day, I'll end up further than I started.  Gradual, slow, but steady progress should be celebrated. It's about the journey, after all. 🌱 More importantly, this gives me a set amount of time each day to focus on and invest in Kat—something that can be easily lost among the responsibilities of being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, or friend. I'm grateful for these little moments to retreat into my hodgepodge world of interests and curiosities. Today is my birthday, and tears will not be how I end my day. 💯 P.S. Purpose provides those things and more. Your unique purpose is the specific reason why you were created, but you can’t find it without the influence of the purpose-giver. Before you were a thing, you were a thought. Before you were shaped in your mothers womb, God gave you a specific assignment to complete in the earth. Something that serves mankind and you all at the same time. People have tried to define it based on their emotion, the popular trend at the time, or the needs of the marketplace. But we cannot manufacture purpose. Even though it’s ours to steward, it doesn’t belong to us. It’s the creators intent for our lives.
