Christmas Season: Traditions vs. Needs A proverb says: Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees, and the same can be true for Christmas, our traditions, and our needs. Do you follow traditions simply because they are traditions? Many of us do so unconsciously, often pushing past our own boundaries and overlooking our personal needs. Take some time to check in with each other about what you truly need this year during the week leading up to Christmas and throughout the holidays. Which traditions align with those needs, and which ones don’t? This is an opportunity to create new traditions or try something different this year. I’m posting everyday until Christmas with a one word theme. Today’s theme is wonder. The holidays are a time of wonder especially through the eyes of children. Their curiosity about how Santa manages his global gift-giving mission or the mystery of flying reindeer reminds us of a unique perspective: which is the sheer joy of asking questions without rushing to find answers. Somewhere along the way, as we grow up, that wonder often gets replaced with reality, logistics, and the headaches of adulthood. Wonder is never far away. That’s why places like Disneyland and Dollywood thrive, offering escapes into worlds of imagination. It’s also why adults work to preserve spaces like National Parks, curate art museums, and maintain zoos or even celebrate quirky roadside attractions. Each of these places taps into our need to explore, discover, and feel something extraordinary.
