I’ve had this graph in my head for two months. In conversation after conversation, I am noticing that the volumes, systems, and partnerships discussed for each job are simply enormous. But that is the trajectory that I’m on. This graph shows who benefits in the next year if I succeed, on a log scale. My roles in education, leadership development, and then in software sales are reflected. The range of outcomes with roles I’m currently discussing are also reflected. (Yes, that 1B number is real.) Along the way I have had to make sense of this shift in the reality around me and my role in it. I used to think of it as, “How do I put myself in more places?” Now I think of it as, “How do I make the best possible upstream choices?” The collective desire to formally make sense of excellence at this scale is intense. Ultimately, what matters most is your ability to maintain a high level of ambition, make incremental bets, learn quickly, and keep your word. There’s so much change happening around us. Yesterday, I shared a demand curve, and today I want to dive deeper into what it actually showed — the Left-Digit Bias and how it impacts business. The Left-Digit Bias happens when customers focus on the first digit of a price, making $9.99 feel much cheaper than $10.00, even though the difference is small. This simple shift can lead to a big change in customer behavior. The graph I showed was based on Lyft’s pricing strategy. By lowering their prices just below round numbers, Lyft saw a significant increase in demand, which could boost their profits by $160M per year. This example shows how understanding consumer psychology can directly impact a company’s bottom line. For marketers and business leaders, it’s a reminder that even small changes can drive huge results. Understanding what drives consumer decisions is key to strategic growth. I hardly post - and when I do, it's a milestone event. While this post is a few months overdue (and with good reason, I will get to that), I'm proud to say that I have joined the Probe CX Group (MicroSourcing, Beepo, Innovior , Convai ) and continue my journey with Australia & New Zealand's leading provider of Customer Experiences and Business Process Services. Joining the company, I tried to wear the hat of being a customer to objectively assess Probe as a provider of choice, and therefore a company I can present to my customers. And just like any sensible customer, the process was not an overnight decision. My observations: - Does the company have great solutions, and with solid proof points? ✔ - Local presence (a must for work/life balance I learnt), yet with global scale? ✔ - Pragmatic leaders who are also open to ideas and innovation? ✔ - A passionate & switched-on team who works smart, not just hard? ✔ - Is tech & transformation a practicality and not just an aspiration? ✔ - Bonus fact: Probe is the only company I've worked for with 50% of the executive team being female ❤️ Are there gaps? 📦 Leaders, It's time to shift the stuff. Little story for you; When I built my first team from scratch, it was built on a solid foundation of "get shit done". You needed something done or unblocked, you just did it. No questions, no complaints, JFDI. It was fun, for sure, bulldozing through stuff to get customers to buy, engage, onboard, renew, talk, etc... but it only worked for so long. Let me jump to the spoiler: as soon as you start doing something, it becomes your job. Doesn't matter what it is. Soon, you're a random group of people doing a random list of things to make your product work. And for a lot of start-ups, that's how Customer Success gets started. No, it's not a bad thing. Being a "not my job" person in a small team is a bad thing. That isn't sustainable. You do just have to get stuff done. But every now and then, you need to "shift the stuff". People focus on the jobs in front of them, whatever those jobs are. Especially if they've always done them. And as leader, you need to "mow the laundry" (as it were). Every few months, take a step back. Assess the day to day of your team. What's adding value? If the task adds value, keep it. If the task is covering up a hole (in your product, for instance), flag it. If the task should be automated, automate it. At some point, every team at every stage of every company will need to JFDI. We need to get stuff done. But don't stay in that state. If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing properly and finding a scalable solution. If the task list keeps getting longer. As a team, you'll only ever get more irrelevant. Because you'll only ever slip further away from how you're impacting revenue. And this is the primary challenge I talk to CS leaders about. Do it now.
