"Safety concerns are on the rise for transit workers. In the past few years, transportation workers experienced higher rates of workplace violence when compared to other industries. In fact, the transportation industry was in the top five occupational groups with the highest rates of workplace homicide. This is a troubling trend. It endangers the well-being of your workers and decreases the public’s confidence in public transportation systems. The situation has got so out-of-hand that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has ordered 700 transit agencies to protect workers amid rising assaults." I was reminded of a metroMAGAZINE article about assaults on transit workers and felt the need to share it after reading a Federal Transit Administration post about their efforts to reduce these incidents. Many agencies across the country are doing great work to help address this issue, but I think a lot of people simply aren’t aware of how significant driver assaults are. Over a four-year period, "major" assaults—defined as incidents resulting in at least an ambulance ride, if not hospitalization or death—tripled 🤯 . These assaults now occur at least daily. And major assaults are just the tip of the iceberg compared to the verbal abuse and intimidation transit workers frequently endure. I believe the numbers are improving, but it’s no wonder there’s a nationwide driver shortage. Despite all the advancements and innovations in our industry, everything ultimately depends on the driver and their vehicle. So lets take care of them! No sales pitch today, just my tiny effort to raise awareness about an issue that deeply concerns me and deserves more attention. https://lnkd.in/gmxNNnAj

Re-sharing in light of the FTA’s general directive that will require more than 700 transit agencies to take action to protect frontline transit workers from the risk of assaults. In the last 10 years, the NTD documented a 120% increase in the number of assaults against transit workers. The last few days have seen even more instances escalating to a concerning level serving as a reminder as to why this focus is so critical for our industry.

It’s becoming somewhat routine to see videos of airline passengers fighting and even attacking crew members. But the problem is more pervasive, impacting employees on all transportation modes. There’s no simple solution, but prosecuting criminal behavior and training employees in de-escalation techniques is imperative. De-escalation is not a natural instinct. Human beings generally mimic the behavior that they are confronted with. De-escalation requires training and role playing, but given the rise in workplace violence, it’s a valuable investment in our employees and brand. #deescalation #workplaceviolence #workplaceviolenceprevention #fmi #rlpsa #nrf2024
Transit violence is workplace violence. Though it may not be the first thing we think of when considering workplace violence—or “WPV”—these types of acts against transit workers are a form of exactly that. Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers faced by these employees as they perform their duties. https://lnkd.in/eHTTkBDr
