Too often, #gatewaycourses prevent #students from establishing that foundation for future #learning. #Culturallyrelevant #teachingpractices and materials can create the #senseofbelonging that helps #learners overcome difficulties they face in these courses. #Faculty who teach gateway courses are often engaged by the idea of using #culturallyrelevantmaterials to support #studentsuccess, but they may need direction to make that transition. A new report, Infusing #CulturallyRelevantContent in Gateway Courses in #PostsecondaryEducation: Findings and Insights from #CollegeFaculty, from CORA Learning and the Community College Equity Assessment Lab (CCEALab) at San Diego State University, shows that, while instructors endeavor to use high-impact #teachingmaterials and practices in their gateway courses, they often face barriers to incorporating culturally relevant approaches. Fascinating the emphasis in the reporting of this. The lecture is a tool, and not the only way or even the best way to experience high impact face to face learning. The commentary makes it sound like Adelaide are abandoning face to face, my read is that they’re recognizing the opportunity to maximize the impact and value of face to face time for learners and educators in their engagement with each other. We must stop conflating the creation of community and social support of learning with a single physical space and a single pedagogical approach. Even if formal lectures are effective in important ways, they are not a singular solution to diverse learners and disciplines and must evolve as our needs and tools also evolve. The narrative presented in this article is damaging to the university by framing it as fixated on stasis and rigid in how learning occurs, these are stereotypes that don’t reflect any of the dozens of universities I’ve spent time with and the hundreds of impressive educators working to engage with learners and learning in a modern, fast moving, and complex world. https://lnkd.in/gh5JDYs3

As Gen Z fills graduate program cohorts, academic institutions must evolve their teaching methods. The hybrid accelerated model, combining online coursework with periodic in-person immersions, addresses these preferences. However, innovative education models need robust faculty development to succeed. Here are five essential strategies for effective faculty development: 1️⃣ Align teaching methods with learning objectives to ensure meaningful and focused content delivery. 2️⃣ Leverage technology to create interactive, engaging learning experiences. 3️⃣ Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging faculty to innovate and adapt. 4️⃣ Promote the scholarship of teaching and learning to validate effective instructional practices. 5️⃣ Provide robust institutional support for ongoing faculty development. Learn more about how these strategies can transform faculty effectiveness in our latest article: https://lnkd.in/e78dkw5a

Kudos to Grand Valley State University for a nice article in Inside Higher Education today for their Omni program. The program features a hybrid model to provide the learning modality that a significant group of learners prefer. A recent Tyton Partners study, "Time for Class 2023," showed student preferences on course modality are widely varied with 31% preferring Face-to-Face, 22% Hybrid, 15% Asynchronous, Fully Online, and the remaining closely split between HyFlex, Blended, and Fully Online, Synchronous. Kara Van Dam is spot on when she notes for adults that proximity and access matter, and sometimes you need that face-to-face option. https://lnkd.in/gjvVPdXZ

If UGA really walks the walk on this initiative, then here's what I love most about it and what I think other universities and industry L&D programs can learn from .... it's a 3-prong approach that understands the student/learner is one equal part of the successful equation. You can redesign classrooms and offer as much faculty/teaching development as you want, but if you don't understand that today's students/learners (especially students coming into and through higher ed during the COVID era of learning loss) aren't adequately equipped with the self-directed-learning frameworks to embrace active learning, then your program can't fully be successful. In other words, active learning isn't something the teacher magically performs. It's a mutual meaning-making process that requires activity on the part of the teacher, the learner, and the learning space. We need more innovative, systemic, cross-disciplinary initiatives that equip students with the skills and appreciation for active learning they need to leverage those opportunities. That's how you shift the learning culture -- you fire on all three cylinders! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gYr4JwRT
