Looking Back, Moving Forward: European Hydrogen Sustainability & Circularity Panel 💧🌍 As 2024 draws to a close, our team is proud to reflect on the milestones of the European Hydrogen Sustainability and Circularity Panel (EHS&CP). Established in February this year by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the panel consists of a team of 15 hydrogen experts and will be pivotal in embedding sustainability and circularity principles in the development of hydrogen technology across Europe. 🔑 Key Achievements this year: 🔹 Formation of the EHS&CP – a dedicated advisory body for sustainable and circular hydrogen innovation. 🔹 A comprehensive report detailing the challenges and opportunities of large-scale hydrogen adoption, outlining recommendations for a multi-objective optimisation approach to policymaking. 🔹 Development of sustainability and circularity indicators, including environmental, social, and economic impacts along the hydrogen value chain. 🔍 Insights & Challenges: 🔹Material reliance: Critical raw materials such as platinum and iridium face potential supply risks. 🔹Water use: Hydrogen production demands high water volumes, posing risks in water-scarce regions. 🔹Land use: Land use for hydrogen competes with other infrastructure needs. ✅ Actionable recommendations: 🔹Prioritising material optimisation and recycling strategies to address reliance on critical raw materials. 🔹Employing life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools to track carbon footprint, resource efficiency, and socio-economic impacts. 🔹Balancing cost, emissions, and socio-environmental trade-offs in policymaking. Inspired by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Deploy24 last week! 🌟   Last week, I had the privilege of attending U.S. DOE’s Deploy24 in Washington, D.C. The conference was an energizing convergence of thought leaders, policymakers, and innovators—all aligned on the need for open conversations to deliver actionable pathways for scaling sustainable energy solutions like low-carbon hydrogen, SAF, CCUS, VPPs, and many more.   ✨Highlights from the discussions that left me inspired: 💡 Clean Hydrogen: conversations on decarbonizing through scalable hydrogen solutions were correctly focused on how to remove deployment barriers, including the criticality of robust supply chains and infrastructure, the need for demand-pull mechanisms to drive project bankability, and how to maximize federal incentives to catalyze adoption. We recently shared how the latter can create opportunities beyond domestic markets in our Clean Hydrogen Opportunity Across the Pacific. 💡 Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): sharing insights on what is working well and what can/should work better to scale SAF in achieving net-zero aviation is highly valuable. Advancements in feedstock technology and policy support to drive standardization and transparency were particularly interesting. However, the examples of industry leaders who are succeeding at bringing their sustainability investments to the top-line, I believe, is the real game-changer. We covered this topic in depth in our latest Roland Berger publication: Monetizing Green Products 💡 Decarbonizing Cement: addressing the different dimensions needed to decarbonize cement must include collaboration and innovation to deploy solutions like CCUS & low-carbon fuels, but also open discussion about the industry structural barriers to deliver.   A big shout-out to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and all the inspiring speakers and participants for making this event a hub of knowledge and action. Great to see how the Global Impact Coalition, which was spun off from the Forum, is well underway in its pursuit of decarbonising the chemicals sector. The industry has to pursue several pathways to industrial transformation and decarbonization: 1️⃣ Transformation to low-carbon products 2️⃣ Circular products 3️⃣ All-natural materials 4️⃣ Biodegradable materials To succeed in this, the inclusion of value chain partners will be critical. The Global Impact Coalition is a forum for collaboration and experimentation around low-carbon solutions. Its remit is to forge partnerships, foster unconventional collaborations and spearhead solutions through tangible, on-the-ground projects that deliver CO2 reduction. It's a great opportunity for joint commitments that will create stronger market perception and advance market commitments for carbon-transformed materials.
