Looking Back, Moving Forward: European Hydrogen Sustainability & Circularity Panel 💧🌍 As 2024 draws to a close, our team is proud to reflect on the milestones of the European Hydrogen Sustainability and Circularity Panel (EHS&CP). Established in February this year by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the panel consists of a team of 15 hydrogen experts and will be pivotal in embedding sustainability and circularity principles in the development of hydrogen technology across Europe. 🔑 Key Achievements this year: 🔹 Formation of the EHS&CP – a dedicated advisory body for sustainable and circular hydrogen innovation. 🔹 A comprehensive report detailing the challenges and opportunities of large-scale hydrogen adoption, outlining recommendations for a multi-objective optimisation approach to policymaking. 🔹 Development of sustainability and circularity indicators, including environmental, social, and economic impacts along the hydrogen value chain. 🔍 Insights & Challenges: 🔹Material reliance: Critical raw materials such as platinum and iridium face potential supply risks. 🔹Water use: Hydrogen production demands high water volumes, posing risks in water-scarce regions. 🔹Land use: Land use for hydrogen competes with other infrastructure needs. ✅ Actionable recommendations: 🔹Prioritising material optimisation and recycling strategies to address reliance on critical raw materials. 🔹Employing life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools to track carbon footprint, resource efficiency, and socio-economic impacts. 🔹Balancing cost, emissions, and socio-environmental trade-offs in policymaking. New Developments in Cleantech and Sustainable Solutions The cleantech sector is leading solutions that blend creativity and quantifiable impact as the need for climate action increases. The following three major trends are propelling this change: By 2050, green hydrogen production is predicted to provide up to 24% of the world's energy consumption. It provides a clean fuel substitute for industries that are difficult to electrify, such as shipping and steel. Nations are making significant investments; by 2030, Europe intends to invest $430 billion in hydrogen projects (IRENA, 2020). Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU): By 2040, emissions in important industrial sectors may have decreased by 15% thanks to CCU technology. To absorb up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2024, major projects like Norway's Longship are already under way (IEA, 2021). Business Models for the Circular Economy: The global circular economy is expected to generate $4.5 trillion in economic benefits by 2030, and circular practices are causing a stir across several industries (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2021). Businesses that create items for recycling and reuse, for example, are contributing to the reduction of the world's garbage, which is predicted to reach 3.4 billion tonnes by 2050.
