https://lnkd.in/e-8Udjd3 Miami Beach lights the fuse that will limit fireworks displays The use of fireworks on Biscayne Bay or in any residential area in the city of Miami Beach other than on three holidays a year is set to be prohibited, city commissioners have decided. “The proposed ordinance is to help preserve the health of Biscayne Bay,” said Commissioner Laura Dominguez at December’s meeting, “and [it] reduces the risk of water contamination and protects sea life from disruptive chemicals and debris associated with fireworks displays.” This is also a quality-of-life issue, said Ms. Dominguez, as many residents “have come forward with concerns regarding the disruptions caused by the fireworks.” Biscayne Bay is home to a vast array of marine life including endangered species, says the commission memo accompanying the legislation. It has been shown fireworks release harmful chemicals, debris and “pollutants into the air and water, posing significant risks to marine ecosystems, including water contamination and harm to aquatic life disrupting their natural behaviors and polluting their habitat,” the memo says. Fireworks are deadly in more ways than one. Fireworks mask gunshots and deaths. All fireworks are toxic with deadly lead and cadmium ejected into the air and pollutes waterways and fish take in the lead. Then people catch the fish and eat it. https://lnkd.in/eiQ2CX5 Hazardous Metals in Ambient Air Due to New Year Fireworks During 2004–2011 Celebrations in Pearl City, Hawaii Jocelyn A. Licudine, PhD, Henry Yee, BS, [...], and A. Christian Whelen, PhD Additional article information Honolulu, Hawaii, has consistently recorded the cleanest air among large U.S. cities, except once a year during New Year celebrations, because of traditional fireworks displays statewide.1,2 These fireworks result in increased levels of suspended particulates in residential air as high as 300% above the pre-fireworks level, and can cause adverse health effects.3,4 In recent years, residential fireworks celebrations in Hawaii have become increasingly intense, resulting in more fires and increased human injuries despite laws enacted to curb their use.5–7 Moreover, dangerous aerial fireworks from illegal importation and sales punctuate the problem, and may lead to even more health and safety hazards because they are unregulated and generate contaminants of largely unknown composition and toxicity.8,9 Recent legislation has further banned fireworks on the island of Oahu after the 2011 New Year (2011NY) celebration because of health and safety concerns.10 Advanced technologies have transformed fireworks propellants, and new oxidizers and color producers enhance visual effects.11,12 Chlorine-based oxidizers such as chlorates or perchlorates can be used to achieve noise levels equivalent to trinitrotoluene and result in more violent explosions than traditional nitrates.13 Demand for fireworks with designer colors has resulted in increased use of metals as color producers.14,15 Lead (Pb) salts are widely used as igniters to initiate fireworks explosions.16 Manganese (Mn) and Mn dioxide serve as fuel and oxidizer for brighter lights,17 chromium (Cr) is used as a burn rate catalyst for propellants,18 and nickel (Ni) acts as an electric firing device for fireworks.19 Concern regarding environmental and health risks has developed because metals are generally persistent in the environment, perchlorates have been associated with thyroid problems,20 and toxic byproducts (e.g., dioxins) could be produced as a result of atmospheric reactions between metal oxides and organic fuels.21 Before and after every New Year celebration, the Hawaii State Department of Health (HDOH) issues health advisories to the public and reports the amount of particulate matter (PM), specifically the PM10 (≤10 microns [μm]) dispersed in the air during the festivities. The 2005NY celebration resulted in PM10 levels that exceeded the state and federal 24-hour PM10 standard of 150 micrograms per cubic meter [μg/m3].22 Short-term exposure to very high levels of PM

As we celebrate this 4th of July, let's keep safety a priority! With the recent fires we've seen, it's more important than ever to practice firework safety. Here are some tips to ensure a fun and safe celebration for everyone: Keep a Safe Distance: Always light fireworks away from buildings, trees, and flammable materials. Supervise Children: Never let children handle fireworks. Sparklers can be just as dangerous as larger fireworks. Use a Flat Surface: Light fireworks on a flat, stable surface to prevent them from tipping over. Keep Water Nearby: Have a bucket of water or a hose ready in case of an emergency. Dispose Properly: Soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them in a trash can. Follow Local Laws: Make sure fireworks are legal in your area and follow local guidelines. Never Relight Duds: If a firework doesn't go off, don't try to relight it. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water. Stay safe and enjoy the celebrations! 🎇✨ #FireworkSafety #4thOfJuly #StaySafe #CommunityFirst #PeerlessRestoration

Are you ready to celebrate Canada Day safely without a trip to the ER? With #CanadaDay just a couple weeks away, many of us will be going out and purchasing consumer #fireworks to celebrate with family and friends. Too keep ourselves and family members safe, we should remember to follow some basic #safety practices when handling and setting off fireworks as they can seriously injury you and others. 1. Purchase fireworks from legal and reliable sources to ensure they meet safety standards. 2. Read the instructions! I am guilty of it myself sometimes, but reading the handling and setup instructions that come with the fireworks can prevent injuries. This includes safe viewing distances. 3. Set up outdoors in a clear, open, and stable surface and check the wind to blow away from spectators. 4. Light one at a time and never let young children handle fireworks. 5. Check your municipality/region for fire bans or restrictions and have a bucket of sand, water, or fire extinguisher on hand. 6. Properly dispose of fireworks once they are spent and do not try to re-light a "dud" or defective firework.
