https://lnkd.in/eJwvwKdP Amtrak derails decades of deals to serve Miami International Airport Amtrak, now eight years late pulling its first train into a station built to its specifications at Miami International Airport, has finally set a firm arrival date: never. In a short letter, the National Railroad Passenger Corp. stunned transportation officials who had been negotiating final details of Amtrak’s station lease by saying that running its Miami trains as far as the airport would cost too much. Just label Amtrak’s Silver Meteor and Silver Star the Hialeah Express. That’s the official end of the line, now and into the future. That decision comes 27 years after Amtrak and the Florida Department of Transportation signed an agreement that was a pillar of the decision to build the Miami Intermodal Center at the airport and to build out the Amtrak station that has sat empty for eight years awaiting its first train. As recently as July the state responded to an email regarding the railroad’s terms to begin the service. The state said, essentially, let’s go as soon as we update the original 1997 contract. Instead, Amtrak pulled the plug. At its Dec. 18 meeting, the county’s Citizens’...

https://lnkd.in/e-8Udjd3 Miami Beach lights the fuse that will limit fireworks displays The use of fireworks on Biscayne Bay or in any residential area in the city of Miami Beach other than on three holidays a year is set to be prohibited, city commissioners have decided. “The proposed ordinance is to help preserve the health of Biscayne Bay,” said Commissioner Laura Dominguez at December’s meeting, “and [it] reduces the risk of water contamination and protects sea life from disruptive chemicals and debris associated with fireworks displays.” This is also a quality-of-life issue, said Ms. Dominguez, as many residents “have come forward with concerns regarding the disruptions caused by the fireworks.” Biscayne Bay is home to a vast array of marine life including endangered species, says the commission memo accompanying the legislation. It has been shown fireworks release harmful chemicals, debris and “pollutants into the air and water, posing significant risks to marine ecosystems, including water contamination and harm to aquatic life disrupting their natural behaviors and polluting their habitat,” the memo says. Additionally, fireworks in residential areas have been associated with public...

https://lnkd.in/eHqWhSy9 Two-tower Little River development targets 355 residences Miami-based B Developments is proposing a major mixed-use project bringing multi-family residential units and more than 35,000 square feet of ground-level retail space to a high-profile intersection in the Little River neighborhood of Miami. Applicant LGE 79 LLC plans to build the 12-story dual tower development, 7880 Biscayne Boulevard, on property at 516 NE 79th St. and 7800, 7810, and 7880 Biscayne Blvd. Designed by Stantec Architecture Inc., the development will be home to 355 residential units, ground floor retail, and a parking podium for up to 589 vehicles. The city’s Urban Development Review Board unanimously recommended approval, with one condition: Eliminate a proposed vehicle exit drive onto 79th Street. Attorney Christopher A. Penelas, representing the developer, said the property is composed of four lots on the west side of Biscayne Boulevard between Northeast 78th and 79th streets. The site is just north of the Little River. In a letter to the city Mr. Penelas wrote, “The property is within the developing Little River area, where an array of new commercial and residential uses have been developed or...
