However, the Civic Center itself, with its mix of city, county, state, and federal properties, presents a unique challenge due to complex ownership arrangements. Dr. Jennifer Charlot, Ed.L.D’s second favorite thing? Making learning real for students through community partnerships. 🚦 Ms. Felisa Rivera and her fourth grade science class teamed up with the NYC Center for Architecture and Transportation Alternatives to tackle pedestrian safety around the school. Rather than just serving vehicles as transportation networks, our streets can be spaces in which to convene, create, and experiment The enhanced roles streets can play include: Streets as Living Rooms: the “third spaces” where communities are forged. Placemaking strategies that create the infrastructure for these meaningful interactions include tactical plazas, parklets, open streets, and sidewalk cafes. Streets as Canvasses: a place for creative expression. Programs that enable these activities include Street Murals, Temporary Art, and Paint Box. Streets as Experiments: public spaces where new tech- nologies are tested and integrated into the built environ- ment. Spent the last 2 days with Bryan Boyer in Michigan, seeing up close all that he has built over the last 4 years at Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan B.S. in Urban Technology program, and dreams for the Univ. of Michigan Innovation Center in Detroit (https://lnkd.in/eQKUG2ae). The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation and its Civic Design Studio evaluated the 76 Place proposal and developed guiding principles to assist decision-makers and the public in assessing the project and ensuring it meets world-class standards. Road design is highly influential on the speed people will drive, regardless of posted speed limits. One of the available lifehacks for any city looking to retrofit neighborhood walkability or protect and prioritize vulnerable populations, is to install cameras as a first step to physical redesign. And if you’re a person that’s continually finding themselves speeding past elementary schools or down shopping main streets, that may require some further introspection beyond the reach of good urbanism.

Three student projects will be showcased at Lights On Stratford, an annual festival running until January 19, 2025, as part of the course Special Topics in Media Architecture, highlighting the students' ability to merge technology and the arts. 🎨💡 “I wanted to think about the land acknowledgement as more than just this ceremonial thing we do.” - David Han In only 10 weeks, students were tasked with creating interactive installations that prompt audiences to reflect on local, non-human activity across time. The design process taught at the School begins with thorough research and early-stage presentations for feedback. 🧠🔍 As part of this process, 12 student teams presented their prototype installations to a panel of representatives from Lights On, the City of Stratford, and the Stratford School. The top three selected to be on display are: 🌊 A Living Entity: An interactive installation that animates the Avon River, highlighting its significance for Stratford's future. Team members: Fiona Qi Feng, Cathy Le, Christopher Ho, Finn Duncan-Snobel, Kelly Wu, Adriano Campisi, Yolanda Liu, Caden Chan, Steven Poung 🌙 Nocturnal Visions: This project raises awareness about the crucial roles of nocturnal animals, showcasing their unique behaviours and environmental contributions. Team members: Dasha Sterehova, Chantel Wai, Cameron Dunn, Sara Kanana, Olivia Dunford, Zenia Rangwala, Anthony Chen, Lena Schiffler, Alex Robertson The course, GBDA 412 – Special Topics in Media Architecture, was designed and taught by David Han, a media artist and PhD candidate in Cinema & Media Arts at York University.

Per Tuesday's news, a blockbuster proposal for United Center-adjacent land represents a giant step toward "restoring the traditional neighborhood development pattern," in the words of Chicago planning commissioner Ciere Boatright. Fifty-five acres of surface parking lots that have long severed the Near West Side would be redeveloped with a mix of up to 5,000 housing units (20% affordable), a 6,000-seat music venue designed by Los Angeles architecture firm RIOS, and a hotel with 2.5 acres of elevated park space. Field Operations and Chicago-based site design group, ltd. and are other key members of the project design team, placing deserving emphasis on landscape and the pedestrian experience. United Center CEO Terry Savarise describes the approach as more neighborhood infill than entertainment district. It's a model one could imagine deploying for the Guaranteed Rate Field environs in Bridgeport. We agree with the Sun-Times Editorial Board that the project must be done carefully and with community participation and that it's encouraging that no public moneys are being sought initially. If tax dollars do come into the picture, we hope the primary use is for construction of a new CTA Pink Line station.
