The small convenience store over the corner? Gone, underwater.
The large tractor factory employing over a thousand people? Silent.
The thriving local shoemaker megastore? Flooded.
The houses of more than 100,000 families? The ones that still stand, empty.
The lives of more than 170 people? Silence.
All that happened to one of Brazil’s key states, my state, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), after unprecedented rains resulted in large-scale flooding of densely populated areas over many weeks.
Phase 1: rescuing the people
The Brazilian civil society – true heroes – has mobilized to rescue, shelter & feed countless human and animal lives, and to fund all that through sweat and donations.
Phase 2: rebuilding the future
Furniture, food supplies, merchandise, and countless other things were all destroyed by the floods. The “Gaúchos”, as people from my state are known, desperately need help to rebuild their lives.
