Ecocem is proud to announce our involvement in a successful industry consortium that has secured £500,000 in Innovate UK funding through the ‘Contracts for Innovation: Decarbonising Concrete’ competition. Led by John Sisk & Son Ltd, the consortium includes Ecocem, Ramboll Group, Loughborough University, Creagh Concrete, Capital Concrete Ltd, and BRE. Together, we’re developing a pioneering, scalable low-carbon concrete demonstrator at Wembley Park, London. This project marks the first application of Ecocem's new low-carbon concrete technology, ACT—a breakthrough cement technology combining a range of technical innovations with the use of widely available low-carbon ingredients to decarbonise the production of cement by as much as 70%, while enhancing the strength and durability of the concrete. John Reddy, Ecocem’s Director of Concrete Technology Deployment, said: “Since embodied CO2 in construction is 11% of all global emissions, and clinker, the critical ingredient in cement, generates two-thirds of these, finding ways to reduce emissions from cement and concrete is critical. Transforming the Construction Industry for a Greener Future! Further insight into innovative companies driving sustainability in construction. Over the next few weeks, I'll spotlight their solutions for decarbonizing the industry. Cement - Part 2 🟢 Terra CO2 Technology: Terra CO2 provides low-carbon alternatives to traditional Portland cement, aiming to decarbonize concrete production. Their OPUS Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) can replace up to 25% of Portland cement, while OPUS ZERO is a full replacement that achieves zero CO2 emissions without relying on carbon capture technologies. Both products are scalable, cost-effective, and designed to reduce the cement industry's carbon footprint. Terra rigorously tests its materials to meet industry standards and is continuing scaleup for commercial deployment. 🟢 Brimstone : produces ordinary Portland cement using carbon-free calcium silicate rocks, eliminating the CO2 emissions typically released during cement production. Their process also generates supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) and incorporates magnesium from the same rock to permanently capture atmospheric CO2. This innovation offers deeply decarbonized cement and SCM from a single source, significantly reducing the environmental impact of traditional cement production. 🟢 CarbonBuilt: has developed a method to produce concrete blocks without using Portland cement, reducing embodied carbon by 70-100%. The company uses calcium-rich industrial waste materials, water, and aggregates, then presses them into moulds and cures them in a CO2-infused chamber, which drives a chemical reaction to form solid concrete. This process enables significant carbon removal. Spun out of UCLA in 2019, CarbonBuilt began commercial production in Alabama and is working on large-scale production this year and into 2025. 🟢 Prometheus Materials: uses a nature-inspired process to create zero-carbon bio-cement and bio-concrete. Their technology combines microalgae and natural ingredients, mimicking the structure of coral and seashells. Developed with intellectual property licensed from the University of Colorado Boulder, this innovative solution aims to replace traditional cement with a sustainable, carbon-neutral alternative. There's a variety of different approaches being taken to decarbonise concrete. At Concrete4Change, we've taken the approach of developing novel technology to mineralise CO2 into the cement in concrete. In doing so, Concrete4Change's technology presents the most innovative, effective and easy-to-adopt approach for utilising CO2 in concrete. As part of the Contracts for Innovation: Decarbonising Concrete competition, Innovate UK has decided to fund a demonstrator project using our ACT #LowCarbon cement technology on a live job site at Wembley Park, UK. Hot on the heels of the announcement of our involvement in the construction of the Energy Transition Zone Ltd, we’re thrilled to tell you about another landmark project we’ve been working on. Together with Veolia, Breedon Group plc and Meldgaard, we’ve delivered England’s first-ever pour of low-carbon IBAA/R8 concrete at Veolia’s Ling Hall Incinerator bottom ash processing site in Warwickshire. Breedon’s specially designed concrete mix, combining Meldgaard’s Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) with Recycl8’s R8 Mix, provides a high-performance, lower-carbon alternative to traditional concrete. With support from the Environment Agency, this project proves the real-world potential of circular economy solutions in reducing carbon footprints.
