Perhaps the most dramatically successful climate change mitigation project on the east coast. It's a tiny project that cost millions, but we have to start somewhere. #climatechange #sustainability #impactinvesting
16 years of living shoreline restoration is working! The first photo was taken on this day sixteen years ago, November 14, 2008. The foreground is my front yard, the middle is the roadway, and the concrete barrier marks the beachfront. Since then, Baysave, The Nature Conservancy, various universities and other nonprofit groups have worked to conduct research to make Money Island a model of shoreline stabilization and restoration. The second photo is taken today at high tide at this same location during the deepest water flood of this year. Living shoreline restoration, combined with rock jetties and seawalls where necessary, really does work to stabilize and restore our shorelines. Baysave is now managing the first ever private placement investment to allow ordinary citizens to own part of the company that made this possible and now plans to establish New Jersey's first clean energy marina. If you want information on becoming part of the sustainability revolution, contact Tony Novak at 856-447-3576. #climatechange #sustainability #impactinvesting

📚🔥From fuelling imaginations to campfires, Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island is turning books bound for the landfill into fire logs. “There are really no avenues for people to get rid of books at all, and if you think about the type of books that people have, nobody else wants, like encyclopedias. Nobody wants an encyclopedia anymore,” said Krafta, Habitat for Humanity’s Mid-Island executive director. In 2023, Habitat for Humanity secured $60,000 in funding from the Regional District of Nanaimo's Zero Waste Recycling Funding program. This year, an additional $80,000 was granted to sustain and advance the project. Habitat for Humanity's goal for 2024 is to divert 25,000 books from the landfill—equivalent to roughly 14,000 lbs of literature.🌱♻️ #Doughnuteconomics #HabitatForHumanity #BookLogs #ZeroWaste #RecyclingFund #CommunityImpact #Sustainability #LandfillDiversion #EnvironmentalInitiative #ReadingForChange #MidVancouverIsland

PURA VIDA IS SOMETHING TO BE;). i HAD A GREAT TIME WITH THESE FANTASTIC PEOPLE, MUCHA GRACIAS! There are many good examples from the world of GREAT organizations. Qoute from their web page: "In Costa Rica we have built into our cultural identity the concept of Pura Vida. This means pure life. To us Pure Life is zero waste. In nature there is no waste. Everything is rather a resource for another system. While Costa Rica is known worldwide for its clean energy, reforestation, among other natural resources and wonders there is still much to do. We believe that zero waste is essential in creating a circular system to stop the damage being done to our environment. But, it doesn’t stop there. The Clean Wave also works towards repairing the damage to our environment and communities." Read their great Annual Report 2023 and catch up with them, this is dynamite;) @thecleanwave.org https://lnkd.in/gE4PpiXs
The damage to our environment is so obvious and clear. That was our motivation and we started with a simple answer. We cleaned our beach.

Excellent example of a funder supporting a church capital project where: ✅ The church building provides a venue for lots of different activities, not just church worship ✅ There is a demonstrable need for this (there are no other suitable buildings) ✅ Significant local fundraising demonstrates how important the church is to the local community If you are looking for funding for a church project, please bear this in mind. You need to start by asking who is this important to?
🫶Each year we support capital projects to improve rural and urban faith buildings, so they can be used more widely by the local community. One such project was helping support sustainable heating at St Peter & St Paul Church, Great Casterton, in Lincolnshire. ♻️The church community planned on installing air source heat pumps as an environmentally sustainable alternative to their old systems, which matches our commitment to supporting environmentally friendly projects. Read more about the grant we gave, and find out how to apply for capital project funding: https://ow.ly/CY4750To14m

Happy Earth Day, everyone! 🌍 As we celebrate our planet and all its wonders, let's not forget about the importance of estate planning for the future of our loved ones and the environment. Consider including environmental nonprofits in your estate plan (which can also minimize income and/or estate taxes). You may also consider the recent phenomenon of “green death” by including sustainable options and innovations when it comes to funerals and burial plans. By incorporating green initiatives into your estate plan, you can help ensure that your legacy lives on in a positive and impactful way. Let's work together to protect our planet for generations to come! #EarthDay #EstatePlanning #Sustainability

This is my nephew, Eamon. I am lucky to be an auntie to two nephews and a neice who I simply adore. Although this might not be your typical #compost post, I do want to write a touchy feely line or two about why I think the regenerative movement, which compost is a key point of, is the most important thing happening right now. It’s the children of today who will be left with the mess of tomorrow. To think about how we are leaving the planet with landfills landFULL, is terrible. Landfills are part of the waste system that keep us disconnected to the land and biological processes we are a part of. To cut down on your landfill waste, you’ve got to take out the things of value first. Food is the most valuable (duh - we have to eat to live right?) The beautiful process of food scraps mixed with yard waste (got to get your balanced mix of greens and browns) that makes a nutrient-rich soil amendent really roots us back into what our planet is good at doing, creating life and leaving no waste behind. I do this for the children even when I don’t have any of my own (although I see my sister’s children as my own). I also love green spaces, and compost is a component to helping green spaces grow. That’s all I got today. Much love to you all as we celebrate a long weekend in Canada for Easter. ✨ #30daycompostchallenge #ilovecompost

Today, on Earth Day, we're reaffirming our commitment to our planet and our community. At ODS, we believe in walking the talk when it comes to sustainability and social responsibility. Here's some of the ways in which we're making a difference: 🚲 Repurposing Abandoned Bikes: Instead of letting old bikes rust away, we give them new life through a bike repurposing initiative with local charities. Abandoned bikes are refurbished and reused, promoting sustainable transport options and helping to reduce waste. 🔌 Exceeding Our Electric Fleet Target: Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us - it's our way of doing good business. That's why we've exceeded our target for transitioning to an electric fleet. By prioritising electric vehicles, we're reducing emissions and leading the charge towards a greener future. ☀️ Utilising Sustainable Energy: We're harnessing the power of sustainable energy, such as solar panels, to fuel some of our operations. We’re committed to minimising our environmental footprint and embracing renewable energy sources. 🌿 Improving Oxford's Green Spaces: Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our own walls. Through our efforts to improve Oxford's green spaces, we’ve created meadows, planted trees, and established community orchards. #EarthDay #Sustainability #CommunityImpact #GreenInitiatives #RenewableEnergy #EcoFriendly #ReduceReuseRecycle #ClimateAction #BikeRepurposing #ElectricFleet #SolarPower #GreenSpaces #EnvironmentalStewardship #Oxford #OxfordCity

There is incredible power in sustainable, community-driven solutions. Take Bruce Power's (an OMERS Infrastructure investment) Truax Dam Removal project. By removing a nearly century-old dam that blocked fish passage, they opened the door for fish to access better spawning habitats in the Saugeen River system, boosting fish production. This was part of a Fishery Offset Program to counteract annual fish losses due to impingement and entrainment. The impact didn’t stop there. Removing the dam also created opportunities for recreational activities like kayaking and canoeing by improving river access and making the area more accessible to the community by adding a public green space. Check out this before and after:
