Here’s how your multiplied donation can make a real difference: $25 x 5 = $125 — enough to cover a room setup and an emergency welcome pack for an at-risk youth. $45 x 5 = $225 — this provides five weeks of transport for a young person in Stepping Stone House’s care. $100 x 5 = $500 — enough to cover an entire year's worth of educational supplies for one young person! If you've been considering a donation to a local org during GiveBIG, I'd love your support at my fundraising link for Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound. As a board member, I know just how far a donation of $10, $15 can go to help more youth. The clubs offer a place for growing, learning and playing. BGCSPS also supports amazing things outside of the clubs including Teen Mental Health First Aid training - a program that coaches teens in grades 10-12 or ages 15-18 on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use, challenges among their friends and peers. As the inaugural executive director, I launched the Institute with our mayor in 2015. We've worked hard to make improvements in what can only be described as a very broken mental health system. Here’s a snapshot of some accomplishments in the past 9 years: Commercial health insurers are now required to pay for medically necessary treatment of any mental health and/or substance use disorder defined by the American Psychiatric Association, impacting millions of Californians who receive this care. Tens of thousands of Californians who live with a serious mental illness and are homeless, or at great risk of becoming homeless now have access to permanent housing with services attached, due to the Institute’s multi-year effort which, in the end, leveraged $2 billion and created the No Place Like Home Initiative. Californians who find themselves experiencing a mental health crisis can dial 9-8-8 and will receive a compassionate response from trained mental health professionals rather than a response from law enforcement.
