💧 Today, ERG is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), a cornerstone in the foundation of public health protection in the United States. ERG celebrates the progress made over the last 50 years and is honored to have supported many of the key milestones achieved along the way, including: 📜 Regulatory development: Contributing to the development and implementation of nearly every major regulation promulgated under SDWA. ⚙️ Technical assistance, training, and funding: Helping water systems across the country build the technical, managerial, and financial capacity needed to ensure delivery of safe water today and into the future, and building and supporting state and federal infrastructure funding programs. 🪈 Addressing emerging contaminants: Helping communities and water systems develop innovative, affordable, and collaborative solutions to manage newly identified and unregulated contaminants. #SDWA50 #SafeDrinkingWaterAct #WaterQuality #PublicHealth #Sustainability #ERGImpact

While we know New Zealand must improve its health and safety performance, there are examples where we've got the key building blocks in place and are achieving outcomes as good as our Australian and UK peers. The independent Taskforce report dives into this example with Methanex Corporation which has been designed an upper tier major hazard facility (MHF). But the challenge remains - how can we continue these examples of success across all businesses and all parts of the regulatory system? “Part of progressive improvement is accepting that there is no single solution for solving the water safety aspect. It’s about the learning that takes place within the service provider context... It pushes service providers to learn about their systems, test new things and make improvements”️ | Prof. Katrina Charles at #UNCWaterandHealth last week 🗣 This focus on progressive improvement is one of the key principles emerging from REACH programme partnership work to catalyse change around water safety. At the UNC Side Event: “Operationalizing the WHO small systems guidance with results-based contracts” Prof. Katrina Charles and Dr Saskia Nowicki joined Uptime, World Health Organization, Water Mission, Whave Solutions, FundiFix, The Coca-Cola Foundation and Cova, to discuss progress and recommendations for future developments in this space. Building on a global diagnostic published in 2021, Uptime and REACH have developed a result-based funding mechanism to incentivise enhanced water safety monitoring and management by professional service providers. The approach brings together three key principles - water safety planning, progressive improvement and strengthened data for decision-making – aligning with the recently updated WHO Guidelines, hence the collaborative session at UNC. 📱Follow this YouTube link to watch the session in full: https://lnkd.in/ev8_c3Vm Other relevant resources: 📄Results-based funding for safe water report - https://lnkd.in/eetEhQZw 🚰 WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality: small water supplies (2024 update) - https://lnkd.in/gF_DuCTj 📝 Global prospects to deliver safe drinking water services for 100 million rural people by 2030 - https://lnkd.in/drNQqcsM #WaterSecurity | School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford | Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford | University of Oxford | Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office | University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

In the ever-evolving landscape of public health and environmental safety, one of the most pressing concerns for water utilities is the presence of emerging contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks, PFAS compounds pose significant challenges for utilities striving to maintain public trust and ensure water safety. This is where Capital Strategic Solutions (CSS) steps in, offering a suite of services tailored to support utilities in managing communication and education about PFAS. AWWA/AMWA file petition for review of new PFAS rule American Water Works Association and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) on June 7 filed a petition with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to review U.S. EPA’s Final PFAS Drinking Water Rule. They stated "AWWA and AMWA share EPA’s goal of protecting public health. The associations are concerned, however, that EPA did not rely on the best available science and the most recent occurrence data and used novel approaches as the basis for portions of the rule. The petitioners believe the rule underestimates nationwide costs and adds to affordability challenges without achieving the public health outcomes we all seek." Many would agree with AWWA and AMWA's concern that EPA did not use the best science in setting the PFAS MCLs. It we be interesting to see how the Supreme Court's upcoming decision on the Chevron doctrine may affect the court's deference to the Agency on these MCLs. #AWWA #AMWA #MCLS #PFAS #EPA https://lnkd.in/gkZjKmXk
