Leading a successful anatomical pathology lab aligns with the principles and recommendations outlined by CAP. CAP provides comprehensive guidelines and accreditation standards for pathology laboratories to ensure the highest quality of diagnostic services. A successful leader in an anatomical pathology lab would adhere to CAP guidelines by implementing robust quality control measures, maintaining accurate documentation, and participating in proficiency testing programs. They would prioritize continuous education and training for staff to stay updated with CAP's evolving standards and best practices. By following CAP guidelines, the leader would ensure that the lab operates in compliance with regulatory requirements, resulting in accurate and reliable diagnostic reports. Furthermore, effective communication and collaboration with clinicians, as encouraged by CAP, would enhance patient care outcomes by facilitating interdisciplinary discussions and providing valuable insights for treatment decisions. Overall, aligning with CAP guidelines is vital for a successful leader in an anatomical pathology lab to maintain the highest standards of quality and patient safety. All too often pathologists are reduced to the glass they push by pathology trained and non- pathology trained adminstration as the only contributing measure to laboratory productivity. A great paper below with some key take - a - way points: - There is currently no standard tool to measure the workload of pathologists. Many pathologists are salaried, and workload is not tracked as it bears no weight on compensation - There are significant fluctuations in workload, both in quantity and in complexity, that may range from reading straight forward H&E slides to performing multiple procedures like immunostains and molecular testing - Activities such as administration, quality assurance, teaching, research, and professional development that are indirectly related to patient care may occupy up to 40-50% of a pathologist’s time. If these aspects are not properly captured in a pathologist workload model, then the calculated value will be seriously undervalued. - Unlike other specialties, there is no physical reflection of excessive workload, such as office or operating room hours, that is related to physical limitation, and there are no wait times related to pathologist workload, unlike other disciplines that are usually fee for service based. #pathology #workload #burnout #FFS

"Within chaos comes opportunity" All stakeholders within Pathology in NZ are negotiating what can only be described as the most challenging period since the 'contracting wars' in the mid 2000's. We have also been gifted a rare opportunity to turn things around. Currently there is no national governance, strategy or direction for the Pathology sector and dire future workforce prospects if this situation continues any longer. This simply has to change and there is a lot of opportunity to transform and provide a service and model that best fits our publicly funded Pathology requirements. One of my regular pleas to health and political leadership is the stark warning of 'No Pathology = No Healthcare'. The other plea is that every allocated pathology dollar needs to be spent on pathology if we are to get a sustainable future. My other dream is to see our diagnostic and research facilities working closer together and sharing advances in both staff expertise and efficiencies, particularly across aspects such as precision medicine approaches and advancing diagnostics. To achieve this our scientists need to be promoted and encouraged to tell the world so to speak what they are looking at and sharing the wealth of scientific health data we see every day. Currently things are so stressed and tight that the last thing on any of our diagnostic scientist's mind is anything but survival and getting through the seemingly endless challenges in front of us. A total reset in priorities and direction is needed to get things back on track and promote the vital role of knowledge and health discovery as an essential part of our status as diagnostic scientists. We have our own NZIMLS journal which gives the opportunity to tell the world what we are doing but also document the journey we are all on. This journal has been part of the fabric of the NZIMLS since it's inception in 1946. This journal is built on the work of volunteers throughout the profession and provides us all with the opportunity to share the gospel so to speak. Stability is a rare trait across our Pathology sector but the 78 year history of the NZIMLS has provided exactly that over many defining periods since it's formation post WW2. https://lnkd.in/g65hFc5a
