#EmergencyMedicine #physician questions the huge increase in advanced #imaging being performed in the #EmergencyRoom. Questions whether all that imaging is actually helping #patients or maybe actually harming them. He is brave to ask such a question. “The causes of overtesting are complex and varied, including things like #malpractice risk, #financial incentives (It’s really easy spending other people’s money), the preferences of #consultants, lack of available follow-up, #patient expectations, the increasing complexity of emergency medicine, and the prevailing culture of perfection in #medicine.” He says Emergency Medicine should actually take a hint from #PrimaryCare. Imagine that!! Know the pre-test #probability before ordering expensive or lucrative stuff! Do they teach that in #MedicalSchool or residency? Might be an important skill in a world of increasingly limited resources. #TripleAim #QuadrupleAim #HealthcareCosts #PatientCenteredCare #Healthcarecosts #HealthEquity

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 If you're a doctor, you know that one of the hardest conversations to have with a patient or his/her family is one that involves delivering bad news. You could have to give a bleak diagnosis, discuss a complication that may or has already occurred during a surgery, or even deliver the news that a person's injuries could be fatal. This is sometimes overlooked in educational training, or you may not have as many opportunities to explore the best way to do this. The article, "Breaking Bad News" by Gregg K. Vandekieft, M.D. that appeared in the 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝑷𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒏 Journal, discusses this issue, outlining a practical method for delivering bad news. This method is called the ABCDE method and was developed by Rabow and McPhee. They performed a lot of research and synthesized information from various sources and practices to create what they believe to be the best way to deliver bad news to a patient. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀: A--Advance Preparation B--Build a Therapeutic Environment/Relationship C--Communicate Well D--Deal with Patient and Family Reactions E--Encourage and Validate Emotions The article outlines each of these areas in more detail. If you are at all interested in developing stronger relationships with patients, especially in this area of communication, I recommend reading and studying this article and method. And if you've read it, do you agree? Have you ever personally used this method? ______ Hi, I’m Amanda. 👋 I help new international medical graduates transition into the US Healthcare System by developing confidence, accuracy, and clarity in their interactions with patients and colleagues. 📨 DM me to book a free chat if you’d like to learn more. #healthcareprofessionals #medicalprofessionals #img
