Silence is Not an Option: A Call to Action Against Community Violence - Dr. Kyza A. Callwood In communities plagued by violence, the cycle of loss feels relentless, leaving scars that run deep. As we witness the rising tide of senseless killings, it’s clear that our collective silence is no longer an option. Each statistic represents a life cut short, a family forever changed, and a future extinguished. We must recognize that change starts at home and extends into our neighborhoods. Parents, teachers, and community leaders need to engage more actively, fostering open dialogues about conflict resolution, empathy, and respect. Empowering young people through mentorship programs can provide them with the guidance and support they need to navigate their challenges without resorting to violence. Moreover, we must unite as a community, not only to mourn but to mobilize. Neighborhood watch programs, community gatherings, and church-led initiatives can create safe spaces for connection and healing. The time for action is now. Let us reclaim our streets, restore our sense of safety, and rebuild a culture of respect and care. Together, we can break this cycle and forge a brighter future for our children and ourselves.

One of A Better Whitehaven's Four Collective Impact Goals/Critical Community Well-Being Indicators is Safe Neighborhoods. Decreasing the rate of violent crime in Whitehaven. In a recent study done by the State of Tennessee, 38116 and 38109 are ranked 2 of the Top 10 most violent zip codes in the State of Tennessee. Many of the violence are not random acts of violence but violence the result of interpersonal conflict and lack of conflict resolution excaberared by poverty and the pressures of every day life. The goal of our Safe Neighborhood Initiative- Whitehaven Restored- is to use evidence based Restorative Justice Core Principles and Practices to include all generations participating in repairing harm in our. community. We will engage community partners already engaged in Community Violence Intervention (CVI) work in Whitehaven to form a Whitehaven Safe Neighborhoods Collaborative aimed at increasing their collective impact. Uptilizing the Black Code of Conduct and Restorative Justice Circles and connecting our most impoverished residents to economic and educational opportunities and other social emotional support services we aim to get ourselves looking at each other as brothers and sisters instead of distant strangers. It's a tall task but it can be accomplished together. #ABetterWhitehaven #BetterTogether #CollectiveImpact #CommunityDevelopment Together We Will Make A Better Whitehaven ❤️

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor.studio: The right connection can transform a community. In 2024, leading YFS taught me that real impact happens when we bridge gaps between services, people, and possibilities. This year proved what's possible when we put community needs first: - Expanded critical homelessness outreach services in Logan - Strengthened our executive team to enhance advocacy impact - Built deeper partnerships across government and community sectors - Enhanced service delivery through strategic recruitment I'm grateful to our partners, government stakeholders, and especially the YFS team who show up every day to serve Logan. Your commitment to practical, community-focused solutions makes real change possible. Looking ahead to 2025: We're focused on expanding YFS's impact through enhanced service delivery and stronger community partnerships. Logan's challenges are complex, but together, we're building solutions that work. To everyone working to strengthen our community: Thank you for proving that when we connect services to needs, transformation follows.

2moYou couldn't have said it better, Dr. Callwood. “Silence is Not an Option.” We must stop waiting for acts of violence to occur but take proactive measures to prevent them from occurring. Violence is preventable, and there are evidence-based solutions available to address it. To create a safer community, we need to focus on: 1) raising awareness, 2) providing resources and training, 3) implementing Behavioral Threat Assessment Models (BTAMs), and 4) establishing programs that connect with communities and neighborhoods—especially those that engage and empower our youth. There's many more and there's research around violence prevention and safer communities. I appreciate your meeting with my office, and I hope the Department of Homeland Security's CP3 office, along with other U.S. government agencies, can serve as a beacon of hope and resourcefulness, providing the solutions you mentioned not just for the Virgin Islands, but for communities across the entire country.
