Admission. For someone who works in advertising, I rarely like ads. Especially Christmas ads.
But I love the new Waitrose ad. It’s a proper big idea that really delivers.
It’s a who-dunnit, with a Christmas afternoon movie vibe - Poirot, Knives Out, the after dinner Cluedo family board game turned into a lovely campaign - it’s a concept that holds up.
Instead of starting with a name, or an advertising property - they started with an idea and then, like making a mini-movie, they cast proper actors! It’s awesome.
Is that Matthew Macfadyen, and what’s her name from Fleabag, and that bloke from Slow Horses - and Joe Wilkinson from everything.
It works. The lightness of touch, the writing, how far the idea goes without going too far. The OOH works too!
It’s ace, and gives me back a little bit of faith in advertising and the power of ideas.
