On Kindness... A few years back, I found myself at a burger bar in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, where my flight to SFO had been delayed by a few hours, threatening my connection back to Singapore. Not in the best of moods, I ordered a cheeseburger and a beer as solace. The burger arrived, then after some delay the fries showed up, followed a few minutes later by the ketchup and mustard. No sign of the beer. I must have said something a bit churlish to the waiter, because the guy sitting next to me said something I’ll never forget: “Dude, chill. Nobody gets up in the morning wanting to serve burgers to a**holes at O’Hare.” It did indeed chill me right down and I subsequently got the beer and made my connection. And I left a big tip. As Plato is rumored to have said: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." What are your thoughts on this? This is a fascinating real life case study to follow on #leadership, and #organizational_strategy. Following Starbucks' recently appointed CEO Brian Niccol, I am reminded of how important it is for companies to identify the core of what makes them great, then to be extremely cautious not to deviate from that core. It seems as though in many cases, it isn't big decisions that lead a company down the wrong path, rather it is the compounding effect of many seemingly small and insignificant decisions. I think this is a great lesson on why strict adherence to a well thought out mission, vision, and values is important for any company. Any decision, no matter how small, should be filtered through that lens. If making a decision in a certain way leads the company away from its mission, vision, and values EVEN A LITTLE BIT, it should be re-considered. Excited to follow along as we get to watch a talented leader help a struggling company return back to what made it great in the first place! I must admit, it is hard to find that "Third Place" now a 'days...

Why do we need people to challenge us? What’s the upside of having our cage rattled? Today I had the privilege of delivering my “Fearless Leadership” workshop where we drilled down into the two biggest fears that hold us back; fear of rejection and fear of failure. One of the things that used to get in the way for me as a leader was fear of rejection, and because of that I tended to take it quite badly when people challenged me. I would take it as rejection. However I learned to reframe that rejection as a positive thing; being open to challenge is a sign of strong leadership not weak leadership. The picture below is a perfect example of why being challenged is a good thing. It depicts the great upset that occurred when wine connoisseurs, in a blind tasting, unanimously agreed that the Californian wine was superior to the French wine. Nobody there liked having their views challenged but it marked a turning point for the wine industry and allowed us to enjoy some first class new world wines. (Just to be sure I took part in a wine tasting last night at The Vineyard where this picture can be found, and I can confirm the wine WAS wonderful.) So you see, being open to challenge can be the catalyst for many wonderful things.
